A week is a long time in football and two weeks can seem a lifetime. If we look back at our last month of footy it would be fair to say we have experienced both ends of the footy spectrum.
The first 2 weeks of the last month were quite challenging. First we lost to Red Cliffs then we lost an unlosable game to Mildura. The phone was ringing hot, the morale was down and we were slipping from the top 4 and certainly losing touch with the top two teams.
Fast forward to the last 2 weeks and things have been a lot more positive. We worked hard against a resurgent and dogged South Mildura, followed by a smashing of Merbein last Saturday. We go into the split weekend clearly holding onto 3rd position and 1 game away from 2nd spot. After the weekend off footy we play 2nd placed Wentworth in our inaugural Indigenous Round. A win will see us take 2nd spot.
All in all I feel we are in a good position. The weekend off is great timing and on our return it is squarely on our shoulders to beat Wentworth to take the 2nd spot we deserve.
Last weekend against Merbein it was great to see Leon Johnson playing his first senior game for the club. He certainly didn’t just make up the numbers, he was very influential, taking some great marks and working well in the ruck. Leon has certainly put his hand up to stay a part of the senior side. With so many distractions and constant challenges lately it was very rewarding (as a coaching staff) to sit back and watch Leon play a pivotal role in the win against Merbein. Well done Leon! Keep up the hard work.
As I have already said this week we have the weekend free of footy. We did our recovery and video review last Monday night and will have a full week off before we resume again this Monday. Having the opportunity to have a break at this time of the year is invaluable, not only for the playing group but their partners, families and friends and of course all of the volunteers that help make our great club what it is.
Enjoy the break and I encourage everyone to be at our next home match on the 11th July where we play Wentworth (for 2nd spot) in an exciting first for Victorian Country Football with the inaugural Robinvale Indigenous Round.
