BFNL Introduces of Fair Game Respect Matters Program

The Ballarat Football Netball League is pleased to announce the introduction of the AFL’s Fair Game Respect Matters program across the Ballarat Football Netball League throughout the 2012 season.
The AFL Fair Game Respect Matters program looks to shift attitudes that have been historically embedded in the industry in an effort to make it clear that behaviour that demeans, harasses or harms women will not be part of this sporting code. This program is being used as a social change vehicle and from 2012 onwards all Ballarat Football Netball League clubs will contribute to the change of attitude in this area.
Research from the Australian Bureau of Statistics from 2006 shows that:
- 1 in 5 women have experienced sexual violence sing the age of 15.
- 4 in 5 women who experienced sexual assault knew the offender.
- 1 in 5 women who experience sexual assault will report it to the police.
- 1 in 3 women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15.
- The number of women who experience sexual assault would fill every seat in the MCG with 20,000 occupying standing room.
- Violence against women and the children cost the Australian economy $13.6 billion in 2009, $3.4 billion for the state of Victoria.
The above statistics show that issues related to sexual abuse and violence against women is still prevalent in our society and there is still much work to be done to educate the community and encourage social change.
CEO Rod Ward said, “The Ballarat Football Netball League are delighted to be the first Country Football League to adopt the AFL’s Fair Game Respect Matters program and we look forward to working with our clubs and be leaders in our community to encourage social change.”
The Ballarat FNL has long recognized that “football” is a powerful vehicle to drive positive social change, and this program builds on a number of important initiatives the Ballarat FNL have implemented in recent years that include:
· “Respect For Women Round” with Purple Arm bands & fundraising for Ballarat CASA
· White Ribbon Ambassadors in CEO Rod Ward & Ballarat FNL Board
· Dedication of Semi Finals & support of Vic Govt “ENOUGH” campaign
· Implementation of AFL “Community Education Program” at all Clubs in 2011
· Women Making their Mark Lunch in 2011
As part of the program, all Ballarat FNL Clubs will appoint two club drivers of the program at the organisation. Club drivers will undergo 6 training sessions in 2012 and from this training will be able to promote and ensure safe, inclusive and respectful environments for women and girls at Ballarat FNL Clubs with the aiming of increasing the involvement of women and girls in all aspects of football both on and off the field.

AFL Victoria Fair Game Respect Matters Program Manager Katrina Leason said:
“We are very excited about introducing the pilot program in to our first regional league. Our intention is to give clubs the opportunity to review their existing club culture and develop family friendly, inclusive environments. By actively encouraging women and girls to take on leadership positions on committees, as umpires, coaches and players, we have seen an increase in membership and club sponsorship across our previous Leagues. Clearly off field culture affects on field performance. “

Joel Selwood special guest at 2012 BFNL Season Launch

The Red Onion Creative Ballarat FNL is thrilled to advise that AFL Star & Geelong FNC Captain Joel Selwood will attend the 2012 Ballarat FNL Season launch as “Guest Speaker”.
The 2012 Ballarat FNL Season Launch will be held at the Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday 13th April 2012, with the function commencing at 6.30pm.
Joel Selwood is the current captain of the Geelong Football Club in the AFL, and made his name as a standout junior track and field athlete and footballer whilst growing up in Bendigo.
Selwood entered top-level football early, joining the TAC Cup competition as a bottom-aged player. His accomplishments as a junior included Most Valuable Player awards at state and international levels, captaining Australia in the International Rules Series, and selection in the All-Australian and TAC Cup Team of the Year sides. Despite a serious knee injury during his final year of junior football, Selwood was selected with Geelong's first pick, and seventh overall, in the 2006 AFL Draft.
Selwood made his AFL debut in 2007, winning the AFL Rising Star Award and AFLPA Best First Year Player Award. He has since become a triple premiership player, a two-time All-Australian, a Carji Greeves Medallist, and the youngest-ever recipient of the AFLPA Robert Rose Most Courageous Player Award. Selwood has also represented the Victorian state team as the youngest player to feature in the all-star event, and was awarded the Michael Tuck Medal following Geelong's 2009 NAB Cup victory. As of 2011, Selwood holds the second highest winning–percentage record of any player in AFL history, helping the club reach three successive AFL Grand Finals from 2007–2009 and another in 2011.
Some of the amazing highlights of Joel’s short but distinguished career (up to end of 2011 season) include:
- 114 games & 48 goals
- Geelong premiership player 2007, 2009, 2011
- All-Australian team 2009, 2010
- Carji Greeves Medal 2010
- Captain of Geelong F.C.: 2012—present

- AFLPA Robert Rose Most Courageous Player Award 2009
- AFLCA Best Young Player Award 2008
- Ron Evans Medal 2007

EASTERN OVAL READY FOR BFL SEASON

East Point Football Netball Club (EPFNC) will play all its 2012 Ballarat Football & Netball League (BFNL) season home games at the newly resurfaced Eastern Oval.
All BFNL fixtures will take place as scheduled with home crowds enjoying football played on a new, state-of-the-art surface. East Point’s home game season will kick off on Sunday 6 May with its Round 3 game against Redan.
The City of Ballarat and contractors Independent Turf Services have been working hard to ensure the ground is in premier condition for the 2012 football season. On time and on budget, the City of Ballarat has invested $240,000 into the Eastern Oval turf resurfacing project.
The City of Ballarat thanks the Ballarat Cricket Association, the Ballarat FNL and all associated local sporting clubs for their co-operation during the development of the new surface at Eastern Oval.
Mayor Mark Harris said the new turf surface will provide the community with a first-class sporting ground for the next 15 years.
“We greatly appreciate the support of players of all sporting clubs as we have installed and established the new surface. In particular, we acknowledge the Ballarat Cricket Association and its players, who have been most understanding about the loss of their premier facility for the 2011-2012 season,” said Mayor Harris.
Ballarat Football & Netball League (BFNL) CEO Rod Ward said the league’s players and supporters are excited to play on the newly resurfaced Eastern Oval.
“We are confident that the City of Ballarat appreciates the importance to a club’s long term viability and sustainability that it is able to play games at its home ground, as that allows it to sell memberships, sponsorships and host post match and fundraising events that are critical to a club’s survival,” he said.
“With assurances the ground will be ready for EPFNC’s first home game, I can state that all Ballarat FNL footballers, particularly the East Point FNC, are looking forward to playing on the new turf surface at Eastern Oval this season.
“A new $240,000 surface, and the opportunity to play every 2012 season game as planned, is a great outcome and the BFNL acknowledges the City of Ballarat’s work in delivering this project. We encourage all BFNL supporters and fans to come to Eastern Oval this season and watch some first-class football at a first-class venue.”
Competition play returns to Eastern Oval
The City of Ballarat will manage the use of the ground during the next 12months, as it did when competition returned to Eureka Stadium following its recent surfacing project. It is paramount to protect the $240,000 investment in the project and ensure the new turf health and the long-term sustainability of the asset and infrastructure development.
In the lead up to competition, public use of the ground will be restricted to preserve the new surface for fixtures. The City of Ballarat has prepared a Return to Play schedule and will review the surface each fortnight.
The City of Ballarat will also undertake recognised testing regimes prior to opening the venue. This may also include a trial of players in a match simulation exercise to seek direct player/stakeholder feedback.
Ground usage will increase from October 2012 when the warm grass growing season recommences.
The Eastern Oval Resurfacing Project
The Eastern Oval is the City of Ballarat’s premium regional cricket facility and provides an excellent surface for football due to its sand construction.
The Eastern Oval turf project included the removal of the upper root-zone (50 to 70mm) and the replacement with clean sand and couch grass to create a free draining, resilient, drought resistant surface like Eureka Stadium.
The turf, similar to Eureka Stadium, will be oversown with rye grass (a cool season grass) in late March/early April. This is an additional protective layer for the establishing couch grass and allows another turf system to establish well in Ballarat’s winter months. Once the rye grass is sown, a 21-day exclusion period will apply.

Golden Point juniors on the mend

BY PAT NOLAN FROM THE COURIER
18 Jan, 2012 12:01 AM
THERE is still a long road ahead for the Golden Point Junior Football Club, but that road is certainly a road to recovery. The club is getting back to basics in a bid to prevent itself folding and many positions have been filled. However, there are still a lot of spots that remain vacant and the call is still out to the community to help save the proud club. The Courier last year reported that Golden Point was on the brink of collapse. Main board positions have now been filled, but the Dragons still severely lack coaches for many underage football and netball teams and is in desperate need of people to step up and fill the development roles. Not only are coaching numbers down, but junior players are also needed to keep the club afloat. Ballarat Football League operations manager Aaron Nunn said the league was glad Golden Point survived the latest scare and could now focus on recovery. He said there was now a solid base to build on, but families still needed to jump on board. Nunn said there was still a strong interest in the club’s progress from the Ballarat community which desperately wanted to see it survive. “All we need now is for a few families to commit and move over to the club to assist with boosting player numbers,” he said. “The club has a solid committee in place now and hopefully now this means the club is heading in the right direction.” Jordan Wilkes and Kerrie Leckie have been officially appointed joint presidents, with Wilkes also filling the role of junior co-ordinator with Paul Baldwin. However, the club is still looking for coaches in several age groups and is also on the hunt for assistant coaches. Also on the wish list is a junior netball co-ordinator to assist Kerrie Leckie, as well as coaches for the three new age groups. Anyone still interested in assisting the Golden Point Junior Football Club in an off-field coaching or administrative capacity should contact Jordan Wilkes (0423 632 561) or Kerrie Leckie (0421 112 703).
