Werribee Centrals had all senior teams in the Grand Finals being the A, B, C & D Grade sides and were hopeful of coming home with a full bag of Cups after all these sides finished the year on top of the ladders. The club had high expectations after clearly being the best sides over the whole season in the Geelong & District Netball Competition. Coaches Hailey Sildatke and Kristi Krywula knew their players had the ability to do just this but at the end of the day returned home to Werribee with two of the four Premierships being B & C Grades. Not a bad return for what was a dominant season.
A Grade
Werribee Centrals 23 v Thomson 25
Just about a repeat of last years result with Centrals unable to match the intensity of the Thomson playing group but also did not really combine well on the day with some lost opportunities with bad passes in the strong wind conditions. Thomson seemed to manage the wind better especially around the goal ring whereas Centrals missed many shots that in hindsight could have and should have been made and may have been the difference at the end. Mikalya Ward at GA and Danni Stewart tried hard all game as did Casey Price at GD and the loss of Nicole Stewart seemed to unbalance the side in the last half.
Best: M Ward, D Stewart, C Price.
B Grade
Werribee Centrals 28 V Thomson 20
This was always going to be a great game to watch with Thomson favoured to take the points and Centrals knew this would be a tough game against the uncompromising Thomson girls. Again this week it was the defence of Millie Hudson and Leigh Stewart who gave Centrals the start they needed and did not allow the Thomson goalers any chance to put a lead on the board. They combined well with Amy Giani and Natalie Ramsdale and at half time the scores were even. It was the turn of the forward half to now start to show some ascendancy and this they did with Emma Maycock playing a role around the court as Centrals slowly away for a strong win by eight goals.
Best: M Hudson, E Maycock, A Giani & L Stewart
C Grade
Werribee Centrals 34 V North Geelong 15
Centrals started the game firm favourites and full of confidence right from the start after an excellent win last week in the preliminaries but it was still an even first quarter with both sides making the most of their opportunities. Brooke Short kick started the team in the second and they never looked back with Ellie Tubbs (GS) unbeatable in the goal ring. She took control of the ring and never gave her opposition girls any chances to rebound or clear the area which enabled Centrals to get away by 13 goals to half time. Centrals just continued this pattern of play for the last half to run out Premiers 34 to 15. Centrals rotated their bench with all nine players contributing all game.
Best B Short, T Redpath & E Tubbs.
D Grade:
Werribee Centrals 32 V East Geelong 33
D Grade knew they would have to be at their best in this game to beat opponents East Geelong. East have had the wood on Centrals in 2009 since beating Centrals in the first game of the year. It would be difficult but not impossible. Centrals started slowly and by quarter time trailed by three. As the game progressed Centrals started to find their targets with Mel Bragg dominant as Centrals started to get on top and led at half time. The premiership quarter the girls let themselves down as they lost the momentum and East Geelong from being three behind were at one stage five goals in front. To Centrals credit they fought back in the last quarter but time ran out and they lost by the slenderest of margins. This has been a very strong year for the first year in the competition with many young players playing for the club for the first time. They can and will improve in 2010.
Best: M Bragg & R Clay.
Centrals year will come to a close with Presentation night at the Italian Sports Club of Werribee on Friday evening the 18th September starting at 7.00pm. Tickets are still available from the club.
