PINES FOOTBALL CLUB 2011
BY PAUL WILLIAMS SNR
Neil Tedge continued on as Club President, Leanne Morse took over the secretarial duties from her husband Mark who still made himself available to help out with that work and Terry Bashford stayed on as treasurer. Gary Connolly came in to his second year as senior coach and Paul Wilson, after being an assistant to Gary in the previous year, now took over our reserves team. Jason Morse, apart from playing in our seniors or reserves, once again coached our thirds of who had less than a minimum of lads each week. Thankfully, all opposition clubs sensibly supplied players to fill our team and therefore not cause a forfeit. The team finished last with no wins and once again we look forward to some good lads coming through from our junior club. A number of our 2010 snr listed players found that it was retirement time including Russell Bishop (193 club games), Matt Mackay (155) and Reegan Stubbs (179). Cade Egan (220 club games) and Paul Lewis (135) decided to try their luck elsewhere. This loss of veteran players was not a concern to Gary and although pushing for better recruitment knew that he could persevere with those that he had. There was however a good influx of senior recruits to assist the basis of our senior players, some of who had been in action for many years. Gordon Hendry pushed on in our Reserves and reached 424 club games at seasons end. We had one Thirds player ‘crack it’ for a senior game and that was Rhys Chalkley, son of Barrie Chalkley our cricket club president. Our seniors, after winning the first game of the year v Mt Eliza, were headlined as to be answering the critics but by the half way mark of the season they had won only another three games to be sitting in seventh place. One of those wins however was against 2010 runner up in Seaford who we defeated by 27 pts. The round 10 win over 4th placed Edi Asp was inspiring and by round 13 the team had made it in to the top five. This would be the first time since 2003 that our seniors could possibly be looking at playing finals. The round 15 win over highly rated undefeated 2010 premiers YCW was superb, followed by a win over LWN then saw the team lose the last two games against strong finals contenders in Chelsea and Karingal. The year was over. Very much the same story for our Reserves who plodded along to be within striking distance of playing finals until the last round. Both of the teams finished in sixth place. Snrs with 10 wins missed out by 1 win, Res with 8 wins dipped out on percentage. A highlight of the year was Jamie Messina being equal first for MPNFL Peninsula League Snr Best&Fairest. Not a bad effort considering his career was deemed to be over when he suffered a ruptured spleen in 2010. A Pines netball club was formed in this year following the push by the MPNFL to have all football clubs involved and fielding at least one netball team. Pines fielded an A and a B team and were coached by Danielle Saunders who also handled the administration being President, Secretary and Treasurer. Much in the same vein as the early years for our football club, the netball girls found wins hard to come by but each team did manage one win each. Inaugural team captains were- A team, Emma Messina and B team, Jayne Bashford. Netball Best and Fairest trophies went to A- Carla Middleton, B- Karen Stephens. Leading Goalers were A- Taschelle Archer 186, B- Michelle Maling 127. The awards were presented at the combined Football Netball Presentation night held at the Villa Adriana Reception Centre and football club awards were B&F’s- Snrs Chris Guganovic, Reserves Travis Pastuska and Thirds was Rhys Chalkley. Jamie Messina was third in the senior club votes. Simon Bishop who was third in the league reserves votes received the most consistent trophy. LGK’s were Snrs- Shaun White 41 and Res- Rick Ramsdale 32. Rick finished fourth in the league reserves goals and was close to possibly winning it until he was elevated to the seniors in Rd 16 and then did not play in the last two games. Club Life Memberships were granted to Terry Bashford and Doug Martin. Doug played snrs in 1976 after coming through from our fourths and our thirds where he was captain of that team in 1973 and 1974. He played in our 1972 thirds prem team. He was club treasurer from 2006-09. Most other years would see Doug ‘around the club’ doing whatever work that was required. Will Casey received Life Membership for playing service (175 games) and the Ludewig Family received the Best Clubman trophy. Adam Marriner became our eighth player to reach 200 senior games since 1964 and as seen below, twelve players played every senior game for the season. This was a somewhat exciting season with two of our teams clawing at a chance in the last round to play finals along with fact that our seniors had improved from their being last in 2008 and 2009 and eighth in 2010. We look at this year as being a stepping stone for better times next year.

Worksafe VCFL implement CyberSafety Policy
Today’s society is consumed with multi-media and technology that enhances our lives in manyways, however with the integration of these methods of communication into our lifestyle, misuseand a lack of education as to the hazards of these technologies is sometimes overlooked. The WorkSafe VCFL has in recent seasons experienced the misuse of various forms of social mediaextending into the sporting environment. The ever increasing use of mobile phones and social media (Facebook, Twitter etc) has also beenexperienced in club, league and umpiring group environments. The WorkSafe VCFL Board, recognising the serious aspects of inappropriate use of social media, websites, etc, have decided to introduce WorkSafe VCFL Rules and Regulations to cater forinvestigating and penalising the proven misuse of social media when it relates to the WorkSafeVCFL environment.Leading Cybersafety expert Susan McLean was engaged by the WorkSafe VCFL to present to the 2011 League Seminar in December 2010.
Following Susan’s presentation it was unanimously agreed that the WorkSafe VCFL should developa cybersafety policy to address the misuse of technology and social media at club, league andumpiring group level. The policy was developed in conjunction with Susan McLean, the WorkSafe VCFL Rules Committeeand has been ratified by the WorkSafe VCFL Board. The attached policy’s implementation is mandatory across all WorkSafe VCFL affiliates and relatesto all players, officials, umpires, clubs, leagues and umpire groups and associated personnel. The policy has been developed to protect all affiliated members of the WorkSafe VCFL and willtake effect from April 1, 2011.The WorkSafe VCFL Board will review the policy as it sees fit and requires all clubs, leagues andumpire groups to make certain their playing and non-playing members are not only aware of thepolicy, but understand that breaches of the policy will be dealt with in accordance with theprocedures outlined within the policy, which in turn will result in penalties ranging from suspensionto de-registration if breaches are proven.
While the development of a policy was seen to be an important demonstration of leadership fromthe WorkSafe VCFL the policy must also be coupled with education.Susan McLean, in conjunction with the WorkSafe VCFL will conduct (4) Cybersafety EducationSessions throughout WorkSafe VCFL affiliates across the months of April & May (refer detailsfollowing). The WorkSafe VCFL implore all affiliates and associated personnel to read and understand thepolicy and make it a priority that you to attend one of the education sessions referred to below.Technology is part of our everyday lives and the misuse of such, whether it is intentional of not, will not be accepted by the WorkSafe VCFL.We trust you embrace this policy and thank you in advance for your assistance in making allWorkSafe VCFL players, officials, umpires, clubs, leagues, umpire groups and associated personnelaware of their responsibilities when it comes to the use of technology and the social media.
Cybersafety Education Session for MPNFL will be held in Frankston on 13 May (Venue TBA)
