Calgary Metro Round 1
Inland Athletic Park
May 9, 2015
Under a sunny sky at Inland Athletic Park, the first round of the 2015 Calgary Metro Australian football league kicked off.
This year, the Calgary Metro league has expanded to three sides as the newest team, the Wolves, will battle it out against the Cowboys and Bears to fight for the right to hoist the Kangaroos club cup in 2015.
There were many players who played their first competitive footy matches today. All of these new players played hard throughout the day and immediately showed that they will be valuable additions to the club. Well done!
Match 1: Wolves vs. Cowboys
In an evenly fought contest, the Wolves (6.5 – 41) prevailed over the Cowboys (6.2 – 38).
Despite four goals from Cowboys’ veteran Dan Rolfe the Wolves used a consistent and balanced attack to prevail in the first match of the day.
Strong play in the guts by the Wolves’ Graeme Math and Keith Vogler was rewarded with accurate goal kicking by the forwards. Club newcomers Reece Trevillion, Zach Wintonyk and Dave Parsall also had standout games, as did veterans Dave Swindon and Carl McNaughton.
Match 2: Bears vs. Wolves
The Wolves used the momentum gained in their first match victory to mount an early lead and never look back. This contest was never in doubt as the Wolves earned impressive victory (10.4 – 64) to the Bears (1.3 – 9).
Despite a well kicked goal from Bears’ newcomer Kevin Mueller the Wolves controlled the play for a majority of the match and any Bears forays into the Wolves 50 were routinely turned away by very strong play from the Wolves back lines.
Standout efforts from the Wolves were turned in by Pa Fox, Carl McNaughton and Zack Wintonyk.
Match 3: Cowboys vs. Bears
In the final match of the day, the Bears vastly improved their form to secure a close fought victory over the Cowboys (5.4 – 34 to 4.4. – 28).
The Bears were consistent in all areas of the field and were able to hold off a late Cowboys charge to earn the win.
Notable efforts were put in by Lachlan Griffiths, Donal Sheridan, Matthew Bell, Mark Trestappen and Andy Yardy (Bears); James Doyle, Scott Wilson, Erik Mueller, Liam Whitwell and Dane Rolfe (Cowboys).
The Metro league will resume on June 19, but plenty of footy will be played in the meantime. On May 23, action will move to Banff for the inaugural Banff Ave Brewing Footy tournament that will be contested between several teams from Calgary and Banff. On June 6, the club will travel to Kelowna to participate in the Annual Kelowna Cup.
Also, special thanks to Jer Green who constructed a brand new club scoreboard. The scoreboard looks tremendous and is an excellent addition to the grounds.
Standings after Round 1:
