Rex Gamble was a positive influence as a player and now he is determined to use this attribute to help resurrect the fortunes of the Fitzroy Gracemere Sharks.
Although Gamble (pictured) is no stranger to the club, he is realistic about the work that is now in front of him as he attempts to lift the Sharks.
"I don't expect a grand final after last year's effort," he admitted.
"Making the finals would be a bonus."
Gamble won't rule out Fitzroy as a title contender but is realistic about the club's chance of going all the way in his first year back in charge.
"We will be rebuilding but if we get there, then that would be good," he conceded.
The big man coached the Sharks for a few seasons but then in a surprise move announced his resignation prior to the start of the 2008 season.
At the time Gamble refused to expand on his reasons for leaving and he is still reluctant to be drawn on the subject apart from saying he was glad to be back after having a year off.
"There have been big changes," he said.
"They (Sharks) have a whole new board."
The Sharks go into the 2009 season with Tony Wust as the club president, Bruce Brymer as secretary and former player Ryan Wilson the treasurer.
While they should be able to provide off-field stability, the club is also looking to give Gamble the support he needs to turn around Sharks' performances on the park.
Assisting Gamble with the A-grade team is Michael Wakeman who also takes the reserve team squad on match days. In the under-20s Brian Rutherford is retained after success in 2008.
Also on-board with the Sharks is fitness and conditioning trainer Blair Vea Vea.
While Gamble returns to the Sharks with a three-year plan for making the club a powerhouse of club football, the hard work started this week at Saleyards Park.
"We will be training Tuesdays and Thursdays," Gamble said.
"We will start with the endurance stuff until Christmas and then get into the short, sharp stuff."
Gamble said it was too early to predict who would make up the club's playing roster this year, but believes the nucleus of last year's squad would be available.
He's also been in contact with players he hoped would form a part of the squad.
"I rang a few of the boys and there was a bit of umming and ahhing. It is still early in the season for them to commit."
