Season 2010 Rules

Correspondence received from the Umpires indicates a couple of proposed rule changes.

1   International Rule interpretation reads -"For Free Hits (including corners and sideline restarts) taken by the attacking team inside the 23 metre area the ball cannot be played directly into the circle:-

  • At a 'self-pass' the ball must travel at least 5 metres from the point of the free hit (not necessarily in a single direction) before the taker himself can play the ball into the circle.
  • Alternatively the ball must be touched, deflected, hit  or pushed by any other player before either it enters or can be played into the circle."

This means -This is a change to the rule introduced last year that the ball needed to travel 5 metres in radius last year. Now, after European trials and at the World Cup, the International interpretation is that the ball needs to travel 5 metres cumulatively by the ball carrier before being played into the circle.

2   For Men and Women’s Premier League, Metro 1 and Under 18 only in the Metro Competition:

  • On the first ‘break’ at a Penalty Corner the offending first player is sent to the centre line.
  • The defensive player cannot be replaced.
  • The attacking player can be.
  • In the case of a goal-keeper they would need to be replaced by a player wearing a helmet with the rights of a goalkeeper.

FOR PREMIER LEAGUE WITH A TECHNICAL BENCH ONLY: (as all PL matches should have a Tech Bench this should not disadvantage any team)

  • That at the issue of a green card,  the player will be sent off for a period of 2 minutes, to be timed when the player is seated appropriately at the Tech bench and controlled by the Technical Director.
