EFL fixture released for 2012.....

The EFL fixture is now up on the EFL website, with some cracking matches in store this season.

For starters, lick your lips at our round 1 encounter against reigning premiers Noble Park, at the Bullring, with ex-Noble legend Daniel Donati now in charge of the Tigers’ fortunes.

We then get to host fierce rivals Vermont in round 2 and Norwood in round 3, before making the difficult road trip up to Lilydale.

If that’s not enough to get you to sign up early, then how about Blackburn at home in round 5?

This season is shaping as a classic – with lots of exciting new recruits. Make sure you get your membership sorted early and follow the Tigers in 2012.

Forget the AFL Draft – the Tigers pick up Ryan McMahon!

The Balwyn Football Club is very excited to announce the signing of Ryan McMahon. Ryan has played over 200 senior games for Port Melbourne including the 2011 Premiership in an amazing undefeated season for the club.

Ryan brings experience, leadership and winning ways to Balwyn and was seen as a priority for new coach Daniel Donati. “I am absolutely thrilled to have signed someone of Ryan’s ability and experience. Not only is he a great footballer, he seems like a fantastic person with very strong character and values, which are attributes as a coach I am really looking for in recruits. He will be a great addition to an already very exciting and thriving list.”

Summers and Stewart go back to back in B&F

Peter Summers, the bookie’s favourite, has won the Balwyn Football Club’s Best and Fairest, making him the first back-to-back winner since 1972 (an incredible 39 year hiatus).

Peter had a wonderfully consistent season, polling votes in 19 of the 20 games he played in, missing out only in the game against Blackburn in round 12.

Runner Up Nick ‘Norm’ Smith also had a great season, leading from the front in the ruck and up the ground.

Pete and ‘Norm’ were two of only four players to play in all 20 games (the others being Charlie Hendrie and Max Melzer).

Schafer Stewart followed Peter’s lead, taking out the Reserves Best and Fairest – also a back-to-back performance.

Shaun Bergin won the Best Finals Player Award, which was accepted by his family on his behalf. His wife Jess, brothers Paul and Russ and his father Kevin all attended the Presentation Night, where it was also announced that in the future this award would be named in honour of Shaun - "The Shaun Bergin Best Finals Player Award".

Held at Yiannis Tavern Greek Tavern on Friday 18 November, the full list of winners is as follows:

  • Seniors Best and Fairest - Peter Summers
  • Runner Up - Nick Smith
  • Reserves Best and Fairest - Schafer Stewart
  • Runner Up - Matt Clark
  • Seniors Most Improved - Patrick Armstrong
  • Seniors Coaches Award - Marc Watson
  • Reserves Most Improved - Kevin Kensley

Donati appointed new coach of Balwyn

Congratulations to all of the above worthy winners.

It is with great pleasure that the Balwyn Football club announce the appointment of Daniel Donati as the senior coach from season 2012. The club appointed a sub-committee that undertook an open and broad search to find the best applicant for our club. After numerous interviews of high quality applicants, the committee unanimously agreed on Daniel to lead our club forthwith.

We are delighted to have spent time with Daniel understanding the long history he has in football, his insights, passion and success. We wish him the very best in his endeavors to lead our great Tigers to the ultimate success.

A premiership player at A grade Amateurs, AFL reserves, VFL and EFL level, Daniel comes highly qualified to lead the Balwyn Football Club into a new era. A former Captain, Best & Fairest winner and dual premiership player at fellow EFL club Noble Park, Daniel has spent the last three years at Lara in the Geelong Football League as a playing Assistant Coach.

Outside of football, Daniel is a Director at World Challenge, a company that sends young people overseas on life-changing journeys through the under developed world and is highly passionate about the personal development and leadership opportunities the program offers.

“What an amazing opportunity to have been appointed the coach of the Balwyn Football Club, a club with such a proud and successful history. I am very much looking forward to getting to know the boys, working together and hopefully getting the team into a position where we can challenge for the Premiership next year.Winning premierships are never easy, certainly not at this level. The boys will need to work harder together than they ever have before to give themselves a realistic chance. I am really looking forward to that challenge.” said Daniel.

Go Tigers!
