Rams' season ends
September 8 2009 Deniliquin Pastoral TimesDENILIQUIN'S Murray Football League season has come to an end. The Rams went down to home side Moama by 59 points in the first semi final on Sunday. Deni trailed by just 11 points heading into the final quarter, but the Magpies, kicking with the breeze, were too strong. Final score: Moama 16.16 (112) defeated Deniliquin Rams 8.5 (53). The Rams drew first blood with the opening goal of the game, which did not come until the ninth minute of the term. With the wind on their side, Deni booted three goals to one to go into the first change 14 points ahead. Amazingly, Moama had the first nine scores of the second term, including five goals. They took the lead for the first time in the eighth minute. But the Rams put up a fight and kicked the last two of the quarter to cut the lead to just 10 points at half time. Only two goals were kicked in the third period, one to each team, before Moama kicked the first three goals within 10 minutes of the last stanza to seal the game. Rams coach Gary Parsons said his side was "mentally tired" on Sunday. "We're carrying a few injuries and we were just mentally tired after playing a couple elimination finals," he said. "It's disappointing that we're out, but I'm happy with our season overall. "We've had plenty of young blokes climb the ranks and we've had a taste of finals action again. "It's fantastic from a club's point of view," Parsons said. After a straight sets exit from the MFL finals last year, Moama will go into next weekend's grand final qualifier full of confidence having already won two elimination finals this year. Moama coach Shannon Keam said it was a great win on Saturday, not only for the senior side, but for the whole club. "We were really looking forward to giving something back to the club," Keam said. "We were happy to come away with a win in the end." Keam said the conditions were tough and the wind was favouring one end and Moama was happy to stick to its guns against the wind. "Everyone had their task and did it quite well," he said. "It was pretty similar to last week, so it was pretty even." Keam payed tribute to Deniliquin, which was hard at the ball all day and really took it up to its more fancied opponent. "To Deniliquin's credit they really fought hard all day and really took it to us," Keam said. "They have had a good year and played pretty well." Sam Hall and Ben Seignior kicked two goals each for Deni. Sean Moodie, Jarrod Tonta, Simon Maher, Oli Maddison, Rob Resuggan and Ash Parsons were Deni's better players.
U 13’s – Mulwala 28 def Deni Rams 17 Saturdays’ match saw Deni Rams U 13’s going down to a strong Mulwala side at Mulwala. The girls started slowly giving Mulwala a 6 goal lead at quarter time. Meg & Kristen worked hard in defence intercepting and rebounding well. Tess, Eloise and Mel combined well in attack giving Deni more opportunities to score. Indy, Melissa, Ellie and Chelsea worked hard to get the ball through the midcourt but Mulwala were too strong on the day. Awards – IGA: Meg Laing, Amcal: Mel Barlow, Bakers Delight: Kristen Morris and McDonalds: Tess Parsons. U 15’s – Rumbalara def Deni Rams Deni’s U 15’s netball side finals hopes were dashes when they went down to Rumbalara on Saturday at Moama in the 2nd Semi Finals. Deni started well, with a pacy Laura at WA constantly feeding shooters Lucy and Tayla. In an even match, despite plenty of attention from defenders Tegan and Pip, accurate shooting saw Rumba take the lead in the 2nd half of the game. Chloe, Caitlin and Gabbi provided plenty of drive in the midcourt, but a heavy fall saw Pip leave the court in the final quarter. Danielle admirably filled the GK position, but Rumba surged ahead to win by 5 goals. Awards – Laura Biggs, Caitlin Salter, Gabbin McKindlay and Danielle Wilson
The 2009 MFL Home and Away season ended on a positive note for the Deni Rams Thirds on the weekend, with the heavyweight of the under seventeens competition chalking up its 18th win on the trot. James Kildea Lewis starred for the Rams in the first quarter against Tongala, with the man they call the moving brick wall kicking two magnificent goals early and accumulating 20 plus possessions throughout the game. Darcy Pogue was best on Ground for the thirds, roaming the half forward line like a hawk and doing the team things that coach Geoff MaCullum talked about before the game. Jack Dankert was his consistent self and Ricky Gittens led his team for hardball gets and contested possessions. Gilbert McKinnon returned to form with a cameo role in the forward line and Brayden hall kicked three lovely goals at Centre Half Forward. Controversial small forward Jack Tyndall was immediately lobbed into the action in the third quarter, with the specialist forward pocket involved in a sickening collision just seconds after coming on to the ground. Predictably, Tyndall got up, dusted himself off and continued to play, whilst the Tocumwal player he collided with was helped off the ground with a suspected broken nose. It is unsure whether the clash of bodies was deliberate or not at this stage. The Rams have finished the home and away season undefeated and must now refocus for their first Semi Final against Finley next week. It is sure to be a hell of a game.
Deni Rams Finals – 29/8/09 U15’s - Deni Rams 31 def Moama 29 Deni kept its final chances alive with a hard fought win over Mona 31 – 29.Deni started well with accurate shooting from Lucy and Tayla, Moama rallied – but great defensive work from both Pip and Tegan kept Deni on track. The scores were locked at 23 all at the final change.A brilliant intercept from the evergreen Chloe saw Deni take the lead to win by 2.A great tem effort with Laura, Caitlin, Gabbi and Danielle all contributing and taking control of the mid court.Awards – Pip Henderson, Tegan Fisher and Chloe Bulmer U17’s – Finley def Deni Rams A very disappointing end to a fantastic season, Deni just couldn’t put the game together in front of a home crowd, the girls didn’t gel as the great team from previous weeks. The Finley girls played very committed netball and we wish them the best of luck for their finals assault. The U17’s would like to thank their coach Renee Beehag and their ‘Commando’ trainer Dave O’Brien for their commitment and support over the past season.
Deni Rams Finals – 30/8/09 B Grade – Numurkah 65 def Deni Rams 48 The Deni Rams hopes for a senior netball flag have been dashed after the B grade side went down to Numurkah at Congupna on Sunday.A slow start to the first quarter cost the Deni Rams dearly, and they spent the rest of the game chasing a strong Numurkah tem.Star shooters Stef and Telisa combined well under the ring for the Rams, before Stef took a heavy fall and left the court on crutches.Paula shifted into a shooting position and impressed with her accuracy. The Rams defence of Naomi, Steph and Brook took some time to find their feet, but were at there best in the second half of the game.Although the Deni side gave away some height through the midcourt, the speed of Dani and Haylee ensured strong passes into the shooting arc.The Rams were impressive during the 3rd and 4th quarters, but the deficit was too much to chase down.
Rams stay alive with win over Congupna
September 1 2009 Deniliquin Pastoral TimesTHE Deniliquin Rams advanced to the Murray Football League semi finals after beating Congupna by 39 points on Sunday. The locals led at every change on their way to an inspiring win at Congupna. Final score: Deniliquin 15.12 (102) defeated 8.15 (63). Deniliquin had first use of a five-goal breeze towards the ground's eastern end and kicked the opening three goals of the game. Co-captain Eamon Reeves opened Congupna's account with a clever crumb and finish to cut the margin to 10 points at quartertime. The second quarter was much the same as the first - littered with skill errors as both sides were caught playing wide. Congupna made the most of running with the breeze, yet wasted several chances to kick 3.6. Deniliquin capitalised with three valuable goals into the wind to lead by seven points at the half. Ash Parsons moved into the midfield to start the second half and had an immediate impact with two consecutive goals. The Rams extended their lead to 23 points by three-quarter time and sealed the win with six goals to three in the last. "We had about 12 to 14 guys playing their first senior final," Deniliquin coach Gary Parsons said. "The first half was really physical, the intensity was high and we turned the ball over a few times because we were a bit stagnant in moving the footy." Deniliquin ran freely and broke the lines in the second half and its cleaner ball movement provided it with better scoring opportunities. Ben Seignior was brilliant at centre halfforward with five goals, while Lachlan Whitehead kicked three for Congupna. Ash Parsons was instrumental in Deni's second-half dominance, while veterans Rob Resuggan and Geoff McCallum marshalled the defence. Many of the Rams' youngsters also had an important impact in the win. Oli Maddison did a superb job to tag Congupna's best onballer, Shannon Emmett, out of the game, Nick Howe won a number of crucial midfield clearances, Kamen Ogilvie was lively on a wing and Harvey McKinnon was damaging off half back. For Congupna, Will O'Sullivan, Michael Amadei and Josh Wellington battled hard in defence, assistant coach Heath Barton kicked two goals from the midfield and Stan Koullas was effective swinging between forward and back. The loss sees Congupna coach Travis Hampshire's four-year stint ended with an elimination final loss. Hampshire, who will be replaced by Steve Daniel next season, was left to lament a third elimination final loss during his four-year term. "I've always said Deni has the best onball brigade in the competition as a collective group and the way they work together," Hampshire said. "We haven't been dominated in the clearances like that by any side all year. "It's been good to play finals three of the four years I was here, but you always want more. "You always aim to win a final so to not do that is a disappointing way to finish." Deniliquin now advances to play Moama in Sunday's first semi-final at Moama.
