Spain 79 dft Mali 47

Spain crushed Mali who finish their tournament winless.  The win for Spain ensured them third place in Group B and a match up with Russia in the quarter finals.  It too over seven minutes for Mali to even get on the scoreboard here and by then Spain had logged 12 points and was on their way to a big win.

Australia 75 dft Russia 55

Two days ago Australia's point guard Kristi Harrower made the statement "The Opals don't panic".  Our message to Kristi - we believe you.  Under intense pressure from a fired up Russia the Australian's were ndown by as many as 16 points in the second period and not only worked their way back into a winning position, but ended up thrashing the Russians.

Korea 72 dft Latvia 68

A courageous win for the Koreans who established a big lead and then held off a furious finish from the Latvians.  The theme was the same - the Koreans balancing their poor rebounding with a bunch of steals.  Korea knocked down 11 3 pointers - Jungeun Park made 5 of 11 as she finished with 17 points.  The win sends the Koreans to the quarter finals where they match up with the USA.

Brazil 68 dft Belarus 53

The Brazillians get their first win of the tournament in a game where the result would have no impact on either teams standing.  Accordingly, Belarus did not extend their starters, sharing court time around the whole group as the Brazillians, led by Santos, Neves and Nascimento cantered away for a comfortable win.

China 79 dft Czech Republic 63

The host nation wrapped up second place in Pool B with a convincing win over the Czech Republic, in another game where the result meant for little after Spain beat Mali earlier in the day.  Lijie Miao was again a star, her 21 points leading both sides while Nan Chen had another big game with 18 points and 8 rebounds.

USA 96 dft New Zealand 60

No problems here for the USA although the New Zealanders challenged early grabbing the lead a couple of times in the first period.  It was all one way traffic from there though as the USA pulled away in the second period and established a big lead.  Typically the US scored 20+ in each of the four quarters and shared the scoring deep amongst their roster.

The Best of the Boxscores

Australia staged a 36 point turnaround in their win over Russia.  Down 16 points in the second period the Aussies wiped out that deficit in the third with a 30-10 quarter and then storming home wiith a 20-8 final stanza.  A big result in a huge game.  

Something to watch for

It has been claimed in recent days that Pool A is a stronger Pool than Pool B.  Of course, only time will tell and the ultimate indicator will be the quarter final between Belarus (3rd Pool A) and China (2nd Pool B).  If Belarus beat China, it might just confirm this theory.  

Looking Ahead

We know Lithuania will finish first in Pool A and USA will finish first in Pool B in mens competition.  Argentina are secure in second in Pool B and Spain in Pool A.  Third and fourth in both pools are up for grabs today as China and Greece go head to head in Pool B and Australia/Croatia play for third and fourth in Pool A.  Australia need Croatia to lose against Iran while the Aussies must beat Lithuania.  Our tips....Croatia, Lithuania, Greece, Spain, USA and Russia.
