Spain cotinue to show why they are World champions and with this win secured a semi final game aganst Argentina.  Pau Gasol was simply dominant, setting the tone early and finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds in a all-round great display.  Croatia finished this tournament very unlike the confident aggressive side that started it, and outside of Marko Banic, who finished with 15, few players shone today.

Lithuania 94 dft China 68

Lithuania started the finals like they started the preliminary rounds, in scintillating form.  When it matters, this team seems to be able to take its game to a new level.  They rotated their bigs and dealt with Ming, who still managed 19 points, by simply not allowing him any room - a succession of fouls earning the Chinese star 13 trips to the free throw line. The dubious reward for Lithuania - an enthralling match up with Spain in the semi final.

USA 116 dft Australia 85

The most one-side game of the quarter finals and hardly a surprise when you look at who the Australians had to contend with.  The Australians toughed it out for most of the first half and then in a the space of just 7 or 8 minutes, Team USA simply blew them away.  Australia's new found star Patrick Mills caught the eye with another sparkling performance, but Kobe Bryant was the star, dropping 25 points, seemingly without raising a sweat.

Argentina 80 dft Greece 78

From the biggest margin of the day to the closest.  Argentina and Greece played out an enthralling contest here with Argentina getting the win holding off Greece in the last quarter.  The lead never got beyond 7 in this game and it changed no fewer than 15 times during the course of the contest.  Ginobli and Delfino both topping 20 for Argentina, who will match up with the USA in the semi's.

The Best of the Boxscores

If you want proof of depth, look no further than Spain.  The world champs rotated all 12 players into their quarter final against Croatia and with the exception of Raul Lopez, all of them played more than 10 minutes.  The benefit for Spain of course, as the business end of the tournament hots up, is that none of the starters needed more than 30 minutes on court - Gasol playing the most with 26 minutes.

Something to watch for

The Olympic tournament used to classify all teams but not in many.  Once you lose in a quarter or semi final your tournament is over.  Of course, that means we know the minor place rankings right now and here they are....5th Greece, 6th Croatia, 7th Australia, 8th China, 9th Russia, 10th Germany, 11th Iran and 12th Angola.

Looking Ahead

Its semi-finals for the ladies and with Australia's two biggest stars, Taylor and Jackson, both under injury clouds, we are still tipping them to beat China.  Likewise, we are backing USA to beat Russia, we cannot see a repeat of what happened in 2006 occurring here.
