Too good to be Finals bound.

I watched again in disbelief as an assembled group of players made a mockery of the shear talent that they are blessed with, to knock themselves out of finals contention.  Along the way, they were able to embarrass our great club through the abhorent actions of some players.  Well Done.  The shame of it all was that they belonged to our club.  Now I love to see players be confident in their own ability, however with that comes the need for discipline, stamina, leadership, diligence, responsibility, and being able to filter through all the options to come up with the right decision.  Some of these players truly believe that they will go along way in life because the world owes them at least that much.  SORRY, time for a reality check.  These players are unwilling to pay their own way like responsible adults must, they are unable to find their own way to the games or training, and they have the nerve to treat the very people who try to help them, like the scum found on the soles of their shoes.  Adulthood is right around the corner, time to meet it head on, not just wait to be given everything on a platter, because the world just does not happen that way.  This playing group in future will be expected to behave a lot better.  This group should be the group that our Under 8 kids can aspire to be.  They should be able to look up to these guys, and think of them as their very own psuedo-heroes. This should be the playing group that goes out of their way to help out around the club.  How can the majority of these players honestly feel that they are ready to take on the rigours of Senior footy, when they act like spoilt little brats.

Hear, Hear: it could have been soooooo different with what they got together for at the beginning of the season.
Is this a sign of the times........ and if it is what is the solution.
I can hear the oldtimers say 'Conscription never hurt anyone'.
Maybe they're right.

All I can do, Brett, is look to the positives that came of the U18's experience. In years to come they may be seen as the catalyst for a permanent U18 side, and the step to a senior side. They also provided the U16's with six players which helped our cause.

If I consider the potential damage done by an idiotic few, I will be left with feelings ranging from anger to doubt to disappiontment. As a coach in a young club, I can't afford to feel that way. Let's hope that for all the rubbish, some sort of positive legacy is left.

I hope the previous post didn't seem all doom and gloom, it wasn't meant to. It was simply a piece of commentary rebounding around in my head. I truly believe that the side that was assembled was good enough ( talent wise ) to win the Premiership. What they lacked was that common goal, a massive amount of discipline, and most likely a key figure who could bring it all together. That said, Darrell has done a mighty job to keep the team rolling. This side also did not once forfeit, and they were also one of the better behaved sides on most nights. As you said Jimmy, " A sign of the times". A massive find was Micheal Stewart, this young lad will develop into a fine coach, with a little help and positive mentoring, so long as we can keep him around the club until the Seniors take to the field. I was and still am quite rapt that we managed to field a side at all, and truly hope that this continues next year, maybe with a more positive outcome. It has certainly helped solidify a lot of stuff that has been spinning around in my head, and I am more clear on a few pathways that we as a club will have to travel down to keep the club running a long way into the future, certainly long after I'm gone. As a one time PM said, maybe this was the recession that we had to have.
