Boost For Essendon As Blues Hit With More Injuries

It will be interesting to see the outcome of the live Aussie rules AFL match review panel who will be scrutinising Essendon onballer Sam Lonergans challenge on Andrew Carrazzo at the weekend.

Carrazzo suffered a serious shoulder injury in Saturday's boilover at the MCG, and the injury early in the first term was a major blow for the Blues who were well off their best in suffering an upset 30-point loss.

The 15.19 (109) to 11.13 (79) result was the Blues' first loss of the season, a result which went against Aussie rules betting odds, and left Essendon unbeaten after four rounds, their best start since the 2000 premiership.

Lonergans crunching tackle on Carrazzo drove him into the turf, but rather than getting up to take the resulting free kick, Lonergan found him self on the way to hospital.

The Blues confirmed he suffered a right shoulder blade fracture and will have surgery on Monday, putting him out of action for six to eight weeks, which is a huge blow for himself and the team. He will be greatly missed after being the best afield in last weekend's outstanding 10-goal win over Collingwood.

In an injuty summoned game, Carlton defender Jeremy Laidler also hurt his knee in the first term and Chris Yarran suffered a toe injury.

The injuries shouldn’t be used as an excuse for the poor performance though. It was he lack of intensity that proved to be their downfall.

The fight wasn’t quite there and the Essendon players, who went into the game testing the pressure of the Blues, realised this and capitalised on it. The lack of fight gave Essendon confidence which gave them momentum and ultimately the win.

It was a great win for Essendon who were outsiders for this match and the upset win is a massive confidence boost ahead of Wednesday's Anzac Day clash against Collingwood.
