Careful What You Wish For!
Only two days ago I wriggled, squirmed, sooked, yelled and jumped up and down on the spot and pleaded to any nearby God as I watched the Anzac Day clash between Essendon and Collingwood.
And that was before the game started.
By the end of the game I was complaining about Jarrod Blair's lower leg, Jobe Watson's hearing, anything to do with Travis Cloke and any amount of umpiring decisions. After such a battle all I could ask was why couldn't we have at least had a draw. Somehow it would have been a more just and deserving result.
Well, fast forward two days. Pyramid Power 9 10 64 South Cairns 10 4 64. I got my draw and ask myself "Do I feel any better?"
NO! A hundred times NO!
Put into perspective, we played better for three quarters, but as soon as Souths upped the anti, we panicked. The reality is that we were very lucky not to be over run. We managed to play to instructions better and showed more structure than last week. A result of my ranting last week and better training during the week.
But, this is a side which had not previously won a game. Perspective says that whilst we did not lose, we are still falling away.
To ask why, one has to accept the more obvious answer. Henry, Malachi, Charlie, James, Alfred, Thuraka, Robert Gordon and Garrett were not available due to rep duties, injury, code clashes or just plain missing. All 8 would be in our best 22. Hazman, our captain, off at half time. Very hard to cover those losses, and a pretty convenient excuse.
But the reality is that we had the game at three quarter time and got run down. Luckily the bell went. Souths had all the momentum. As a club we need to know that the second tier players can still hold it together. They did. Barely. So after 5 games we are 50%. 2 wins, 2 losses and a draw. It could be worse, and will be unless we find the desire we started the year with. We will see what next week brings and go forward together. One in, all in.
On Wednesday I wished for a draw. Today I got one. And I can safely say that given a choice between a loss and a draw, only a win will do. No more wishing for draws...
...otherwise i'll wriggle, squirm, sook, yell, jump up and down and...Oh, you know the rest!
