Russia and Spain Set For 'Physical' Clash in London

Russia and Spain have both already qualified for the quarterfinals of the basketball competition at the 2012 London Olympics but their next group fixture, which sees them square off against each other, is still not a dead affair by any means.

Their Saturday's clash will determine the winner of Group B but what's more important is the fact that the top team to progress from that pool will avoid a quarterfinal meeting with the mighty USA team that recently thwarted Nigeria by a record margin.

Such has been the performances of the star-studded American team that both Russia and Spain are expected to try their best to win this game so that they could postpone their meeting with them until later in the tournament.

Both the European giants are currently unbeaten, although slight less luck in their respective last games could have easily resulted in a blemish of defeat on their still untarnished records.

Russia's Vitaliy Fridzon nailed a clutch three-pointer against Brazil in the dying seconds of the game to turn a two-point deficit into a slim 75-74 win. Before that, they had managed to let slip an 11-point advantage and if it wasn't for their late recovery, then they would have had to scramble for results in their final two group matches.

Spain's hero in their 79-78 victory over Great Britain was their point guard Jose Calderon, who closed the final quarter with eight valuable points in less than a minute, defying Betfair betting trends, and making sure that his team clinched their qualification for the knockout round.

Russians are well-known for the physical nature of their play, thanks to the low-post defensive presence of Andrei Kirilenko and Timofey Mozgov and others.

However, Spain have shed the 'soft' tag significantly in the past few years due to the emergence of Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka as major players and they have been the most impressive team inside so far in the competition.

Hence, the two countries' meeting promises to be a mouth-watering affair for the lovers of the tough 'old school' game and they are in for a treat tomorrow.
