Sandy appointed NAIA Assistant Coach
Since leaving Trinidad in 2005 to pursue his education and coaching career, Learie Sandy has made tremendous strides.
Sandy, who was the head coach of Trinidad & Tobago Senior Women Netball Team in 2004, graduated from Martin Methodist College in December 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education Degree.
Afterwards he joined MMC as a Student Assistant Women Basketball Coach under then Head Coach Dee Bell for the 2007-08 season. MMC is a NAIA Division 1 program and plays in the Trans South Conference which produced three of the last four national champions.
The following season (08-09) Sandy was promoted to Assistant Women Basketball Coach and his duties included recruiting, working with post players, tape exchange, and scouting report. During this period MMC posted a record of 19-12 which saw them enjoy a brief national ranking of 23 before ending up #33 and missed going to the national championship by one game.
In September 2009 coach Bell took up an assistant coaching assignment with Tennessee Tech University in the Ohio Valley Conference (NCAA Div.1) and under the newly appointed Head Coach Edmund Pipes, Sandy was assigned additional responsibilities being involved in all aspects of the program.
Besides his college coaching duties, he is also involved with the Tennessee White Nike Flight travel team which won the Tennessee U16 State Championship and their Silver team, which was ranked #1 team in the nation, produced 6 of the top 50 national players.
Prior to his migrating to the US, Sandy aka Fruits enjoyed a distinguished basketball career in TT. As a player he represented TT at international senior level (1994-98) and won several Division 1 club championships with National Flour Mills, Superstar S.E.P.O.S and 42 Lakers. He was also the head coach at the Division 1 club level with Petro Jazz (2000-03) and TT Elite (2004-05); at youth level with Millennium Basketball Academy (2002-2004) and Diego Martin Secondary School (1997-2002)
In January 2010 Sandy plans to pursue his Masters Degree at Middle Tennessee University.
