Back in the USA

Well I’m back at St Mary's College in Moraga, California. Studies are going really well and for the first few weeks I had a break from training. This is my second year at St Mary’s and I am looking forward to a big season.
I really enjoyed being part of the Boomers team for 2008, especially playing at the Beijing Olympics and will never forget the experience. It was a massive challenge for me and I certainly learnt a lot. I hope to pass on what I have learned to my College teammates.
It’s not every summer you get to represent your country at the Olympic Games and play up against NBA stars such as Kobe Bryant, Manu Ginobili, Lebron James and Chris Paul. I learned a lot by playing against these players too.
At the moment I am concentrating on my studies and preparing for the new NCAA season that tips off on 11 November. Our first game is on 14 November. I have been training hard and still have a lot of areas in my game that need to be worked on and I will be focusing on these during this season.
Hopefully, this season will be a great one for us. Although we lost a couple of important players from last season, Coach Bennett has a squad of 15 players to choose from. Clint Steindl, my old mate from the AIS is now on the St Mary’s team. I never get lonely with four other Aussies on the team - Carlin Hughes, Ben Allen, Lucas Walker and Clint, and Louella Tomlinson in the St Mary’s women team.
Coach Bennett is looking to improve on last season’s achievements when we had 25 wins and reached the NCAA Tournament. So we are looking to go one better. Hopefully we can challenge Gonzaga and win the West Coast Conference and get back to the NCAA Tournament.
Earlier this month I was fortunate to be named Male Sportsperson of the Year at the Deadly Awards. The Deadly Awards recognise the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the areas of music, entertainment, community work and sports.
It was great to be recognised for my achievements over the past 12 months and to be awarded a Deadly was something that means a lot to me because it comes from the Indigenous community. This was my second Deadly as in 2006 I won the Most Promising New Talent in Sport award.
I couldn’t be at the Sydney Opera House to pick up the award but I was able to send a video message to let everyone know how much it means to me.
I understand that some of our St Mary’s games will be on ESPN in Australia, so I hope you will be able to see some of the action in College basketball.
Until next time...
Patty
