Putting in the hard graft to get into shape for the NBA draft

After thinking long and hard, after weighing up all my options, I've decided to nominate for the NBA draft!

It was a really difficult decision, but I was pretty much in a win-win situation. I'm planning to go in, test the waters, get some feedback and if I don't get the feedback that I feel I need to be in the NBA, I can withdraw my name and come back to Saint Mary's for my third year.

I've been told a lot of stories about what people go through in this situation. It's going to be very hectic and I'll have to make a few sacrifices. I know my fellow Aussies Andrew Bogut and Nathan Jawai were flat out for a few months, but they did whatever they could to achieve their dream of playing in the NBA.

Andrew said to me, “There's an opportunity there for you mate, just take it with both hands.”

I'll put my body through whatever it takes to make sure I'm in the best possible position to get into the NBA. I've started working out, four sessions a day, six days a week. It's a lot of work, but it's going to be all worth it in the end.

I remember watching Michael Jordan on TV, when I was a little kid. I knew that the NBA was the highest form of basketball in the world. As a competitive person, you see the best league and you want to compete in it. I fully realised that when I was at the Australian Institute of Sport, but now that it's actually just around the corner, I have to say it's a little scary, but really exciting as well.

It's all a new experience for me, having to cope with everything outside of basketball, which can be distracting at times. As you can imagine, I've got a full plate at the moment, but I'm handling everything the best I can.

Wish me luck!
Patty

Back in action to lend the Gaels a helping hand

It’s been a while since my last update, but as you can imagine, it's pretty hard to type with one hand.

After five weeks and nine games out, it was fantastic for me to be back out on the court again and playing for St Mary’s.

I broke two metacarpal bones in my right hand, but I'm really surprised how quickly it has healed. I was really well looked after by the trainers at St Mary's and all the doctors and medical staff I saw were fantastic as well.

I was also thrilled that my Mum and Dad managed to make the trip over from Canberra for my comeback game when Saint Mary's competed in the West Coast Conference tournament in Las Vegas. The Strip is definitely a lot more lively than our home town of Canberra.

It took longer than I hoped for me to warm up and get into the games. There were times when I tried to baby the injury a bit, but once I got in the flow, it was all right. It was a bit stiff to start out, but it felt so good just to be out there.

Unfortunately, we lost to our old rivals Gonzaga 83-58 in the final.

The Gaels have not made it to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament. The teams are selected by a committee and we all thought St Mary's deserved a spot, but I guess we just have to move on. I know our coach Randy Bennett was frustrated as well.

I suppose it's a good lesson in a way - you have to learn to handle adversity and to make the most of your opportunities when they do arise.

The good news is that Saint Mary's are competing in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). In the first round we had a good win over Washington State Cougars. It was great to get a win and I was happy with my 27 points on the day.

We've just played against the Wildcats of Davidson College, who had Stephen Curry in their team, a shooting guard to look out for in the future.

The game was the fastest sellout in Mary’s history and there was a brilliant crowd there to see us into the quarterfinals with an 80-68 victory.

It was a personal challenge for me, and the sort of personal experience you don't get every week. I thrive on things like that. It took the whole team to guard Stephen and we did that, a little bit. He had 26, but we guarded him.

We meet San Diego next for tonight's game and if things go well we’re off to New York City.

Thanks to everyone on myFiba for your messages of support and encouragement. It means a lot to me.
Patty

Flying the flag!

Flying the flag!
Australian basketball star and myFiba Ambassador Patrick Mills is a proud indigenous athlete and this week his myFiba website has been given a custom facelift to reflect Patty’s cultural heritage. Patty’s mother, Yvonne, is Aboriginal, and his father, Benny, a Torres Strait Islander, and the website design incorporates indigenous Australian colours and the flag of the Torres Strait Islands. It also features the word ‘Bala’ throughout the design, which means 'respected friend' or 'mate' in the Torres Strait Islands language.

Taking a break from training with Saint Mary's College in Moraga, California, Patty sat down with Nic Mercer, manager of the Boomers, to talk about his cultural heritage and what it means to him.

You’re building up a strong following in Australia and the US. How does it feel to be a role model to young indigenous Australians?
It means a whole lot. Obviously, I really enjoy being a role model not only for indigenous kids but for all Australian kids and I’m very proud of it.

When we toured with the Boomers you would let the guys know about indigenous celebration days and language. Is that something you consciously try to do or does it occur naturally?
I think it’s something that just occurs. Growing up as a young indigenous person I was learning about all the different cultures and it’s something that sticks with you. Growing up in Canberra, my Mum and Dad taught me a lot about it because I wasn’t growing up on the Islands and it’s stuck with me. It’s comments or sayings that I’ll just say, not because I mean to, but just because it’s part of my culture and part of my language. Some of the guys are picking it up and using words like ‘Bala’ and that’s great for me. It helps me a lot actually. If they end up joining in with the language and end up using some of the sayings, it gives me a good feeling that some of my culture is going through some of the boys that I’m constantly around 24/7.

So what’s next? Are you going to bust out some traditional dancing moves that we can all learn?
Yeah, well I’ve already started over here with my St.Mary’s teammates, teaching them how to do some traditional dancing. I’ve started with Clint Steindl [a fellow Aussie at St Mary’s] so that’s next in line for sure. We will start with the baby steps though, get the language down and then out comes the dancing!

It was a big day last week when Nate [Nathan Jawai] played his first game in the NBA...
Yeah, I felt very proud and very excited. I think not only indigenous people but all Australians were proud of what he has achieved. It was such a big deal and I was really proud of him being involved in such a big competition and big league. I've been cheering for him since the first days I’ve met him and always believed he could do something special in his life and he is definitely on the pathway of doing that now.

Mate, there is talk of you heading off to the NBA. Now that Nate has taken the first step, has the pressure of being the first indigenous Australian player in the NBA been removed?
I don’t think there is any pressure at all - for both of us. I guess we see it as already doing the indigenous people proud and we are doing the Australian people proud with what we’ve achieved. So I don’t think there is any pressure there. Obviously, making it to the top level makes people even more proud. It’s definitely a goal of mine in the future and something that I’m keen to have a crack at.

Let’s talk about the Beijing Olympics... when we arrived in the village, you put up the Aboriginal flag that Danny [Morseu, Patty’s uncle] took to the 1980 Moscow and 1984 Los Angeles Olympics...
I’ll never forget when he offered it to me. We were at my house in the living room and I didn’t ask but the subject came up and he pretty much came out and offered it to me straight away. I’ll never forget that moment when he asked me, because it was very special. Not many people in sport can say they’ve done what he’s done. So when I got there I made sure I got it out and made sure it was flying high with a lot of pride. It was a very, very special moment then and I definitely enjoyed having the flag up.

When you got home from the Olympics was there a bit of a family gathering before you took off to the States?
Yeah, there was. It was very hard in the summer because when I got home from school [St Mary’s], I wasn’t able to stay for long as I had camps and tours for the Boomers. I wasn’t home for a whole lot so it was hard to catch up with everyone in the family and friends. So before I took off to the States, we had a big family and friends gathering. For me that’s very important. It’s something that I really love doing and just great to see everyone there talking about whatever. I just love seeing them all there together. That was something that was really important to me.

We’ve had Michael Ah Matt, Danny Morseu and now Patty Mills represent indigenous Australia at the most elite level - are there any other relatives that could play for the Boomers one day?
Ha ha. Yep! Sure is. Little Jordy Mills. He’s just turned seven in early January, so you need to watch out for him. He is my little cousin and he’s going to be coming through. He always wears his Spider-Man outfit, but he’s not a superhero - he’s going to be a basketball hero!

Look out for updates from Patty on myFiba. What do you think of Patty’s new-look website? Leave a comment and let him know.

It’s been a big year - bring on 2009!

It’s been a big year - bring on 2009!
Happy Christmas Everyone, from my little Aussie home away from home, here in Moraga.

Christmas is coming up very fast and I haven't put in my wish list yet! Well not exactly, I have wished for a few things but I will have to wait and see.

2008 was a great year for me. I turned 20, joined the Australian Boomers program and the Australian Mens Basketball team for the Beijing Olympics, travelled half way around the world and started my second year back here at St Mary's College in California.

Everything is going well with my studies and basketball - you know what it's like, hectic moments, timelines and deadlines.

We now have a break in studies but the St Mary's basketball program continues over Christmas and New Year.  Our only break is Christmas Day and it is straight back into training on Boxing Day - New Year's Day too!

St Mary's will host the Shamrock Classics here at McKeon Pavilion on 27-28 December. Last year we won the Shamrock Classics and are looking forward to another successful two days.

At the moment we have been playing pre-season games and are currently on 7 wins and 1 loss which is a good start. We have a couple of tough games coming up over the next two weeks, that are away from home and we hope we can get a win or two.

The NCAA West Coast Conference season starts in early January so I am looking forward to the challenge that the new season brings for me and the team.

When I was in Beijing I received a lot of cards and letters from family, friends as well as young school children wishing me good luck. I want to thank you all for your support.

For now, have a great and very safe Christmas and New Year and if you have time, you can follow my games on ESPN (ESPN will televise 13 St Mary's games in Australia).

Cheers!
Patty

Back in the USA

Back in the USA
Well I’m back at St Mary's College in Moraga, California.  Studies are going really well and for the first few weeks I had a break from training.  This is my second year at St Mary’s and I am looking forward to a big season.

I really enjoyed being part of the Boomers team for 2008, especially playing at the Beijing Olympics and will never forget the experience.  It was a massive challenge for me and I certainly learnt a lot.  I hope to pass on what I have learned to my College teammates.

It’s not every summer you get to represent your country at the Olympic Games and play up against NBA stars such as Kobe Bryant, Manu Ginobili, Lebron James and Chris Paul.  I learned a lot by playing against these players too.

At the moment I am concentrating on my studies and preparing for the new NCAA season that tips off on 11 November.  Our first game is on 14 November.  I have been training hard and still have a lot of areas in my game that need to be worked on and I will be focusing on these during this season.

Hopefully, this season will be a great one for us.  Although we lost a couple of important players from last season, Coach Bennett has a squad of 15 players to choose from.  Clint Steindl, my old mate from the AIS is now on the St Mary’s team.  I never get lonely with four other Aussies on the team - Carlin Hughes, Ben Allen, Lucas Walker and Clint, and Louella Tomlinson in the St Mary’s women team.

Coach Bennett is looking to improve on last season’s achievements when we had 25 wins and reached the NCAA Tournament.  So we are looking to go one better.  Hopefully we can challenge Gonzaga and win the West Coast Conference and get back to the NCAA Tournament.

Earlier this month I was fortunate to be named Male Sportsperson of the Year at the Deadly Awards.  The Deadly Awards recognise the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the areas of music, entertainment, community work and sports.

It was great to be recognised for my achievements over the past 12 months and to be awarded a Deadly was something that means a lot to me because it comes from the Indigenous community.  This was my second Deadly as in 2006 I won the Most Promising New Talent in Sport award.

I couldn’t be at the Sydney Opera House to pick up the award but I was able to send a video message to let everyone know how much it means to me.

I understand that some of our St Mary’s games will be on ESPN in Australia, so I hope you will be able to see some of the action in College basketball.

Until next time...
Patty

Back from Beijing!!

Back from Beijing!!

Hi everyone. I’m back!

All I can say is, “Wow!” What an experience it was to play at the Olympics. It's hard to describe what it was like or where to start.

Our results were a bit up and down. We had the FIBA Diamond Ball tournament in Nanjing, China 2 weeks before the Olympics, which we played very well. We ended up in the final against Argentina and were up by 25 at one stage, but couldn’t hang onto the win. However we all walked away knowing we were on track for our next opponents, the USA in Shanghai. This was an exhibition match, so the result didn’t mean a great deal in the bigger picture, but we wanted to play well in our last game leading into Beijing. The game was a sell out and we performed exactly how we wanted to, only losing to the eventual gold medal winners by 9 points.

So leading into the ‘big dance’ we had faith in our abilities and team mates, but unfortunately we got stuck in our first two games against Croatia and Argentina. Luckily we rebounded and played 3 great games against Iran, Russia and Lithuania, which was enough to put us into the Quarter Finals, against Team USA.

It was an unbelievable experience to be play against the USA. They are best team in the world and although it’s a huge thrill to be involved in any international match, against the USA there's an extra level of excitement.

You have to raise your game when you’re going up against the likes of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony - to name just a few. They are some of the most talented players in the world and I watch these guys all the time in the NBA so to run out on court to play against them is something I'll never forget.

Being part of the Olympics was a fantastic experience. There was a great atmosphere in the athletes’ village and it is amazing to see so many elite athletes from all over the world all in one place.

It was also a great experience to be part of the Australian team. I'll always remember hanging out with my fellow Aussies. We all stick together and there was a really good team spirit.

Now that the Olympics are over, all the Boomers are heading back to their regular teams. I'm looking forward to getting back for another season at St Mary's and taking up where I left off last season.

Thank you to everyone for all your messages of support during the Olympics. Even though I wasn't able to reply, they're always great to read. And hello to all my new friends out there. I hope you enjoy keeping up with my basketball news.

Until next time…

Patty

The final countdown to Beijing - so it's goodbye from me for a while

The final countdown to Beijing - so it's goodbye from me for a while

Hey there!

It's been a good few weeks for the Boomers since I last wrote. First, a clean sweep of the series against Iran (3-0), then two good wins over our old rivals, the Tall Blacks, to retain the Ramsay Shield.

The Iran series was good as we had contributions from lots of different players. We had a different top-scorer in each of the three matches, so hopefully that shows we have some good depth in the squad. I managed to get a few in game two in Adelaide.

The sporting rivalry between Australia and New Zealand means that there's always an extra bit of competitive atmosphere to the games, which the players really enjoy. Over in Auckland I got a chance to play on another 19-year-old, Corey Webster, who was playing his first game. He did really well.

In the Melbourne game, we were really hoping to finish off all our prepatration games in Australia undefeated so we had that little extra incentive. It would've been good to play the Kiwis with fellow mySporter Kirk Penney in their line-up, he'll make a big difference to their side, but I hear he isn’t joining them until they go to Canada.

Here in Europe, it's summer so it's good to escape the cold in Auckland or Melbourne! We have a two-game series against Croatia in Croatia, then we're off to Greece to play another game against Croatia followed by Greece and Brazil. Both are good teams, but Greece in particular will be a challenge, as they are ranked three places above us on the FIBA ladder. Some of the guys who went to the World Champs where we lost by 1 on the buzzer are really looking forward to that game!

In order for us to prepare properly for the Olympics there was a joint agreement among the team that we will only concentrate on our performance. So we’ve decided not to blog for the remaining preparation and during the Olympics. I hope any disappointment will be replaced by some good Boomers news from Europe and of course, the Olympics in Beijing.

Keep looking at the Basketball Australia website for all our Olympic news.

Thanks for all your messages. I'll be in touch again after the Olympics.

Go Boomers!

Patty

Boomers back in action - bring it on!!

Boomers back in action - bring it on!!

Hey there! After spending some time with my family and catching up with a few mates in Canberra, it was back to business with the first of three training camps for the Boomers squad. We're in the middle of the second camp now, here in Perth. The camps are hard work, but it's great getting to know the rest of the players, both how they play and off the court too.

Our campaign is in full swing now, with only a few days to go until the start of a best-of-three series against Iran, starting in Perth next Monday on the 16th of June. The next two games will be in Adelaide on the 18th and finishing up in Melbourne on the 20th. Hopefully some of you can make it along to cheer the Boomers on! We've been keeping a close eye on Iran. They've improved a lot recently, having won the 2007 FIBA Asia Championship in Japan. They also have some top class players like Hamed Hadadi, who's had offers from clubs in the NBA.

We've also been working hard and have a very strong line up too, so it should be a good test for both teams to see where they are in the lead up to Bejing. It's going to be a really hectic few weeks for us before the Olympics. After the Iran series we've got a couple of games against our old rivals the Tall Blacks, then off to Europe for tournments in Croatia and Greece.

The more games the better I say! It's a really exciting time to be playing for the Boomers with the Olympics nearly here. I'll try to keep you up to date with everything in these next few weeks. Thanks for all your messages! Patty PS: Check out the Basketball Australia website for dates and ticket details http://www.basketball.net.au/fs_newsitem.asp?id=79392&orgID=1&Oname=BA&O1c=8&O10c=3

It's good to be back home

It's good to be back home

Hey there.

It's been a while since my last update but it's been a busy, busy time and it's going to get even busier very soon.

I'm now back in Oz and getting ready for the first Boomers camp at the beginning of June. It's great to be back home and catch up with family and friends, but my first season in the US has been a great challenge for me and I am learning a lot.

I’m glad to be back home and have a little time to rest up before a big Olympic campaign. Looking back at my college season, I started all 32 games for Saint Mary's and was named in the Mid-Major Second Team All-American by CollegeHoops.net and the West Coast Conference Newcomer of the Year.  Although being recognized is important, I believe I have improved my game and contributed to my team.

People often ask me what am I going to do next season.  I will be going back to St Mary’s to continue my education and play for the Gaels.  I enjoyed my first year and look forward to next season.

There has been some interest in playing for the NBA, but I've said that at the moment the main goal is to give myself the best possible chance to make the Olympic team and then go back to College. After that who knows what will happen.

Soon after arriving home in Oz I had a short trip down the road to Marist College in Canberra where I went to school.  This was great fun.  It felt like it was only a couple of weeks ago that as a student, I was standing in the assembly singing the national anthem with my friends.  Boys from the junior school were taken through some basketball skills and also put some shots up, but mostly we had great fun on the court. It felt a little strange being back on the outdoor basketball courts again.

The visit was part of Australia Posts’ support of the Boomers this year. They are sending some of the Boomers back to their primary schools as an opportunity to thank them and as you probably know by now, many of the Boomers played basketball at primary school during recess and lunch breaks. I enjoyed my visit to Marist and I will never forget my school days there as a student.

The Boomers have some games coming up against Iran in June. The matches will be played in Perth (Monday 16 June), Adelaide (Wednesday 18 June) and Melbourne (Friday 20 June) so try and come along and shout us on.

Thanks for all your comments and messages of support. Sorry if I didn't get around to replying to you.

Until next time...

Patty

Update from the States

Update from the States

Hey all, sorry it’s been a long time since my last blog entry. Things have been hectic, since my last blog the team has traveled to Hawaii to play in an tournament, my parents have flown over from Australia to visit and I’ve completed the first round of exams. Oh and not forgetting the basketball side of things, we are still winning! We are 16 and 2 at the moment, and have had some great wins over Pepperdine, Cal State and Ohio. There are some tough games coming up though particularly one against Gonzaga - which i here is going to be on ESPN back in Aus.

Having Mum and Dad come to visit while we were in Hawaii was great. Catching up with family in such a beautiful place and then having the opportunity for them to come back ‘home’ to watch some games at St Mary’s was awesome. Everybody really went out of their way to look after Mum and Dad at the games and around the campus. We had a couple of good wins while they were here too so it worked out really well.

As for the school side of things, we had our first round of exams just before Christmas and I can proudly say that I now speak better Italian, well better than ask for a cup of coffee, which is all I could do before! J

Now that the new year is here and I’m actually writing down '2008' it’s suddenly hit me that the Olympics are very very close. The draft Boomers schedule came out the other day and I’m hugely excited about getting ready for it. Usually I’m at the AIS when I’m preparing for an Emus or Boomers camp, so I’ve had to change my preparation a little bit over here. But every time I hit the court for training or games it’s always in the back of my mind that I need to get better for the trials. A lot of friends have been making up their mock Boomers team for the Olympics and whether I’m in it or not we’ve got a pretty good chance of doing well.

Anyway I’d better take off as I’ve got some more study to do. Thanks for all the messages of support.

Until next time…

G'day

G'day

Hi everyone, welcome to my new Mysport page. I'm hoping to keep this site updated with blogs, stats from my games over here in the US and in-sights into the basketball scene as I make my way through it. Currently I’m playing in the US for a college team called St Mary's Gaels. It is located just outside of San Francisco, California, which is beautiful place that I’m really enjoying. St Mary's is a relatively small college team but so far we have had a great start to the season, beating 11th ranked Oregon which was a huge deal. Right now I’m enjoying the competition and am working on my game so I can come home and try out for the Australia Post Boomers team that is going to play at the Beijing Olympics. Wanna say a big 'hi and thanks' to all my family and friends back home that have been supporting me. C u all soon
