Hi, I coach U11's in Canberra. We have a really talented and fast back line and we press high up the park a lot. Any advice for my defenders on managing breakaway runs from the opposition?

WIth the season starting this week the excitement and anticipation at the Mariners is growing. We have had a long but successful pre season in which we finished undefeated in all games. So now we are concentrating on getting a positive result first up against Melbourne Heart. They are the latest A-League franchise to enter the competition and i'm sure will be looking to get a win from there first ever match. Tune in on Thursday night for what i'm sure will be a cracker.

Pre season has started and so has a new era at the Mariners. For the first time in 5 years we have a new coach in Graham Arnold. He is with the Socceroos at the moment but when the World Cup is over he will start full time with us. I'm sure Grahams experience will help the Mariners have a big season. Pre season has been tough so far but it is great to be back with the team and we are looking forward to the start of the season. We play our first trial match on Thursday 17th June against the local state league team Central Coast Lightning.

The last 4 weeks at the Mariners have been exteremely disappointing. 4 losses in a row has been very hard to take but we must remain positive and look for a big win on New Years Eve against Wellington. It is usually our biggest crowd of the season and we need as much home support as possible to help us get 3 points. Lastly i want to wish everyone a very happy new year and a wonderful 2010.

In last weekends game against the Gold Coast you may have noticed i was wearing red laces in my boots. This is part of the 'Lace up and Save Lives' campaign run by Nike in conjunction with the charity 'RED', to raise funds and create awareness for HIV/AIDS in Africa. The idea is to buy some red laces from participating stores for $5 and 100% of proceeds go towards medicating and treating AIDS victims while also rasing awareness through community based football programs. Just under 4000 people die per day in Africa from HIV/AIDS so it is extremely important that we all get behind this wonderful initiative and grab a pair of red laces to show your support.

After 5 consecutive away games it will be great to get back to Bluetongue stadium this week and play in front of our home fans. We have faired quite well on the road recording 3 wins 1 draw and 1 loss. Our last 2 matches have been the most memorable. A great win down in Melbourne followed by a clinical performance up in Townsville. It was great to see our midfielders and strikers scoring quality goals 2 weeks in a row. So we are hoping for a huge Mariners crowd this friday night to help us continue our good form and to cement our place in the top four.

Over the last month we have recorded 1 win 2 draws and a loss. So it has been a bit up and down for us at the Mariners lately. A tough away trip to Wellington ended all square which is a decent result over there. That was followed by a 1-0 loss to Sydney in which we were poor first half but improved in the second and with some luck could have come away with a bit more. A disapointing draw with the Fury was next in which we took the lead after just 15 seconds. We just didn't go on with it and put them away while we were dominanting and it came back and bit us in the second half. Last week we had a great win away at the Roar. We have only won up there 3 times in A-League history so that made it even more special. This week we continue or rivalry with Newcastle in our biggest derby. All the boys really enjoy these games and this one will be another cracker i'm sure.

Well its been a reasonable month for us at the Mariners. We have had 2 wins and 2 losses from our last 4 games. Our win against Perth was especially memorable for me because i scored my first A-League goal. About time! Last weekends win against the Gold Coast was fantastic. Noone apart from us thought we would win and to play so well and score 3 goals was very satisfying. The challenge now is to back it up against the Phoenix in New Zealand which is always a very tough place to go and get points.

4 games into the season and we have had a reasonable start to the campaign. 1 win 2 draws and a loss is a bit of a mixed bag but we are hoping to get another win this weekend. We play Perth in Canberra on Friday night. They are on a roll with 2 wins in a row and have a very strong squad full of experience. We hope the Canberra public turn out in big numbers wearing their yellow and navy to cheer us on.

Well what a great start we had to the A-League. It is always a very tough game playing down in Melbourne so to come away with a win was fantastic. That win will give us a huge confidence boost going into our local derby with Newcastle on friday 14th August. The local derbys against Newcastle are always full of passion and as a player these are the games you enjoy most.
