Round 10 saw us against Hawthorn Citizens in a “must-win” match in the bleakest conditions many present could remember. The focus was starting well and with the breeze we kicked 3 goals to 1 in the first quarter. Our 2nd quarter started badly but our defenders tightened up and worked hard and we took a fiercely contested 3 point lead into half time.
In the third quarter, our opponents were similarly tight early on but we were able to break clear with some valuable scores and took a 17 point lead into three-quarter time. The challenge was at our feet to be the team that wanted the victory more than our opponent and the final quarter was our best for the game, kicking 2 goals to one and running out victors by 25 points.
Jackson was superb in the ruck for three quarters as was Josh Collins with two valuable goals in the first quarter and some really solid work around the ground. Biggsy was tireless throughout the game and Tom after starting down back was instrumental in setting up our scoring in the 2nd half including an instrumental goal in the third quarter. We were also pleased to see JP apply some physical pressure in the back line.
Going forward, we have a critical game next round against Richmond, this will be a real challenge but is winnable if we are able to play close to our full potential.
