Wenty WheelKings shot down by Spinning Bullets

The season is only one weekend old yet it has quickly become apparent the Wenty Leagues WheelKings have an uphill battle this season, not only to reach the playoffs but also to be competitive.

The WheelKings played the Brisbane Spinning Bullets in a double-header weekend for round one of the 2010 National Wheelchair Basketball League (NWBL) competition, with game one at the Auburn Basketball Centre on Saturday night and game two at the Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope Gardens on Sunday afternoon.

Both games were blow-outs in favour of the Spinning Bullets, who were still missing one of their two high-point players in former WheelKing Bill Latham.

The Spinning Bullets won game one 79-34 and game two 95-54 to not only highlight the lack of senior players in the WheelKings line-up but also to stamp themselves as genuine title contenders in 2010.
It had been widely (and obviously incorrectly) assumed this year's title would be fought out between the Perth Wheelcats and Wollongong Roller Hawks but the inclusion of Latham and Spanish professional Agustin Alonso has lifted the Spinning Bullets from the cellar in 2009 to contenders in 2010.

Game One: Brisbane Spinning Bullets 79 (Agustin Alonso 27 points, Adrian King 20, Adam Bates 18) def. Wenty Leagues WheelKings 34 (CJ Grogan 18 points, 10 boards)

Game Two: Brisbane Spinning Bullets 95 (Agustin Alonso 36 points, 22 boards; Adam Bates 25 points, 14 boards; Adrian King 18 points, 9 boards, 9 assists) def. Wenty Leagues Wheelkings 54 (Kylie Gauci 17, Keegan Oh-Chee 15 points, CJ Grogan 14)
