Razorbacks even the score with Wenty

Saturday, 28th August, 2010

After the Razorbacks narrowly lost 84-82 to the WheelKings in Round 3, they were desperate to level the series on their home court today. Showing far more energy than Wenty, Sydney were untroubled to take the win 98-76.

Sydney jumped to a 24-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter and went on to solidify the lead at the half, 49-35. Coach Hewson varied his combinations in the second half but couldn't get his team back in the game. The Razorbacks won every quarter, leading 74-53 at the last break and going on to win by 21.

Sydney's South African import Richard Nortje has proved to be an outstanding aquisition with a 38 point average over his 6 games with the club. Today's 45 points and 7 rebounds was a game-winning effort. Nick Taylor chipped in 14 poiints and 7 rebounds, and youngster Michael Auprince contributed 15.

Wenty got solid contributions from their junior players CJ Grogan (20 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists) and Keegan Oh-Chee (15 points, 7 rebounds). Craig Cannane had 12 points and 8 boards, Liesl Tesch picked up 10 points, and Kylie Gauci had 8 points and 8 assists.

Rebounds, turnovers and free throws were fairly even between the teams but the big difference was shooting percentage. Sydney had a very good 56% accuracy on their 84 shots but Wenty could only manage a poor 42% on 88 attempts. However, simply put, Nortje was unstoppable on the fast break and when he got position inside the key. A real MVP performance.

Coach Hewson said after the game, " our guys didn't have the energy they've showed in previous games. The Razorbacks tore us apart inside. Still, it was great to see CJ and Keegan have very good games again."

Wenty close out their season next week with a double-header against the visiting Adelaide Thunder. Check the schedule on the left for times and venues, and come along and support our young guys in what should be 2 very closely contested and exciting games.
