Team Profile - Wollongong Roller Hawks

The Hawks won their first and only NWBL championship in 2003. They have been hungry to repeat that success ever since, and last year were runners-up to Perth. They'll be under-strength this finals campaign but can't ever be written off.

Thanks to Betty Hassen of the Roller Hawks for the majority of information in the profiles.

#4 Melanie Hall (2.5 - Female*)

Originally from Darwin, Melanie is in her 2nd year with the Roller Hawks. She moved to the 'Gong to play with the team and in the WNWBL. Unfortunately, she broke her leg after the first NWBL game and has been forced to sit out the season.

#5 Darren Hayes (1.0)

A foundation member of the club, Darren is one of the fittest low pointers in the league. He has a great understanding of the game and creates a lot of easy scores for his team mates.

#6 Anthea Castelli (1.0 - Female*)

Much improved in strength this season, Anthea has received significant minutes. She fits into the BIG rotation with her 0.0 pts category - a valuable asset to Coach Williams's rotation.

#7 Brett Stibners OAM (4.0)

Brett scooped the pool at the club's Annual Awards dinner last weekend where he was voted Club MVP. He was also Highest Scorer and he can claim a season triple-double rating only matched by the NBA's legendary Oscar Robinson. An Australian Roller, Brett is the proud owner of a gold medal from the Beijing Paralympics.

#9 Tristan Knowles OAM (4.0)

In a huge blow for the Roller Hawks and for Tristan, his professional playing contract with his Spanish League team has meant he is already overseas and unavailable for the finals.

#11 Yvon Rouillard (3.0)

Yvon had the best FG% in the NWBL this season and is also an outstanding passer and shot-blocker. He is a 2nd year import from Canada and a mid-pointer that plays like a 'big', such is his size and control.

#12 Andrew Tarrant (4.5)

A foundation member of the Club, Andrew famously interim-coached the team to their only NWBL crown in 2003. He has been called from retirement two years in a row and he is an awesome asset on and off the court. His passion and will to win has carried the team to many victories.

#13 Luke Pople (2.0 - Junior*)

The "rookie" of the team and still at school, Luke was voted Most Improved Player at the club's Annual Awards dinner last weekend.

#14 Reo Lewis (3.0)

Reo is the Kiwi Powerhouse of the team but has a soft touch around the basket as evidenced by his 2nd in the league Field Goal Percentage. He came away with the club's 2009  "Player's Player" award as voted by his peers, building on his 2008 Most Improved Player award.

#15 Shawn Russell (4.0)

Shawn  deservedly wore the green and gold in the U23 World Championships in Paris in July after spending a huge amount of time working on individual fitness and skills programs in the lead-up. He's had some big stats games this NWBL season and will be called upon to play a lot of minutes in the finals in the absence of Knowles.

#55 Eino Okkonen (4.0)

Known in the 'Gong as "Mr Roller Hawk", Eino is the cement that holds the club together. Eino was always going to retire when he reached his playing number but is now putting in overtime.

Head Coach Jim Williams

Jim is in his 3rd year coaching wheelchair basketball after a lengthy career playing in the able-bodied NBL and coaching in the ABA. He wore the Assistant Coach jersey at the recent Rollers World Challenge.

Team Manager Pablo Jiminez

Also in his 3rd year with the team, Pablo comes from a player and managment background with the World Game.

Team Physio Joe Sproule

Team Physio since the club's entry into the NWBL, Joe is undoubtedly the best physio in the League by far. And he still has time to manage his commercial practice and be at every game, home and away.
