WheelKings v Dandenong double-header preview

Current Records:

Rangers - 3 wins, 3 losses (4th place)

WheelKings - 1 win, 3 losses (5th)

Wenty Leagues are fortunate to be sitting just 1 place out of the top 4, given their lacklustre record so far this season. However, their 3 losses came against the teams running currently 1st and 2nd on the ladder so they haven't exactly had an easy start.

On the other hand, Dandenong have played the struggling Brisbane Spinning Bullets twice and also stole a win against the back-to-back champions Perth Wheelcats who were missing their 3 best players because of overseas playing commitments. It is fair to say that the games this weekend will be a reliable test of who deserves to be in the top 4 - in fact, if either team can win both games, they will cement their place in that 4.

As reported previously, the WheelKings now have the very talented Bill Latham back in the squad. With just 8 players making the trip south, his size and skill playing as a 3.0 point classification is a real bonus. It gives the team a huge frontline when you add in Koen Jansens and Jeremy van Asperen. Jonathon Simons and Craig Cannane will be the backups across the forward spots and can expect plenty of minutes. The guard duties will be shared between just 3 players - Kylie Gauci, Shannon Dallas and Jeremy Doyle - however they all have excellent fitness and shouldn't have any fatigue issues.

The Rangers last week took it right to the very strong West Sydney Razorbacks in a double-header at Bankstown Stadium. They played without their primary big man Tom Fraser and were still very competitive. In the second match, they led at half-time before fading in the third quarter. With Tom playing this weekend, the scoring and rebounding load will be lessened on Australian representative Shaun Groenewegan. The WheelKings can also expect the Rangers former Paralympians - Campbell Message (Athens silver) and Stuart Ewin (Atlanta gold) - to cause plenty of trouble at both ends of the court. Add in a bunch of promising youngsters and it will not be an easy weekend for the visitors.

Wenty will be feeling confident with Latham back in the squad but he has had just 1 training run with the WheelKings due to a last minute call-up to the national team which took him off to the USA last week. In light of this, it will be interesting to see how the team gels against a smooth-running Dandenong outfit. Hopefully all goes well and the WheelKings bring back the much-needed wins.

The games should be available to follow live via the NWBL's Live Stats at the following link assoc_page.cgi?c=1-4219-0-0-0&sID=72218

So log on Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at the revised time of 10am (was previously scheduled for 12 noon). Go WheelKings!
