Gold in Sight

Gold in sights

Xavier Toby, 25 June 2008, Inner West Weekly

HEADING into his sixth Paralympic Games the second time as a coach Gerry Hewson is hoping to replicate the success of the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Hewson was part of the gold medal-winning men's wheelchair basketball team, the Rollers, which is still the only Australian basketball team to win an Olympic gold.

He went to four Paralympics as a player and has been coaching the women's team, the Gliders, since 2003.

At the 2004 Athens Olympics the women's team won a silver medal.

"We didn't play well in the final. It was sad to lose but looking back it was a great achievement," Hewson said.
