Van Asperen out for rest of season

WheelKings centre Jeremy Van Asperen has finally succumbed to an ongoing shoulder injury. His NWBL season is effectively over following specialist advice that he take at least 8 weeks rest from wheelchair basketball or risk greater injury.

Jeremy, a left-hander, has battled through all season with a partial left shoulder dislocation and associated ligament damage. It hasn't been possible for him to make a full recovery, particularly when he has been targeted and sent flying hard to the floor in several games this year. Training hasn't been any easier with Jeremy's fast pace and relatively unstable chair contributing to a few excursions to the pine. Each impact has resulted in further damage or, at the very least, delayed recovery. Doctors want him to rest then rehab the shoulder in the hope that surgery can be avoided.

The WheelKings all wish Jeremy a speedy recovery and Coach Hewson has told him that there will be no pressure for him to rush back this season even if he recovers quicker than anticipated. The sensible view would be for him to skip the Sydney League in October and make a comeback in the Autumn League in March next year as a warm-up to the 2009 NWBL season.

Take it easy, Jeremy!
