WheelKings coach Gerry Hewson, along with players Kylie Gauci and Jonathon Simon, represented the WheelKings at yesterday's Wenty Leagues Club Bowls Day. It was the 5th year in a row that the WheelKings had sent a team and they were keen to get their first ever win.

It's always a great social day with all the Club's sports sub-committees competing. There's no doubt that Gerry, Kylie and Jon are more comfortable around a basketball court but they gave a good account of themselves when they hit the silky-smooth bowling greens.

The WheelKings drew a tough team of experienced bowlers led by one of the members of the Bowls Sub-committee. As might be expected, our crew fell behind 9 ends to nil and looked set for an early trip to the showers. However, Kylie and the boys went on an 8-0 run to almost level the contest. A tense encounter ensued as the match went into the basketball equivalent of overtime. The score see-sawed until the more experienced bowlers got on top to win 14-12.

Coach Hewson, in the fun spirit of the day, lavished mock praise on his younger charges, "Kylie could easily quit the Gliders and forge a career in bowls, and Jonno was awesome for a first-timer. We've already signed him up for next year!" Following the matches, the sub-committees enjoyed a barbecue together and told stories of heroism and epic failure. A terrific day was had by all!
