WheelKings go Old School

Saturday, 1st November, 2008

The Wenty Leagues WheelKings will be turning back a page in the history books when they wheel out a veterans team in the Sydney Wheelchair Basketball League starting tomorrow at Sutherland.

Named the Old School WheelKings, the team features National League Life Members and legends of the game Errol Hyde, Michael Callahan and Gerry Hewson - although Gerry's participation is subject to a doctor's clearance on his injured shoulder. The veteran component of the team is rounded out by former WheelKings centre Michael King and the WheelKings longest-serving player of 16 years, Craig Cannane. This starting 5 might have an average age of 50+ but they're confident they can give Division One a good shake.

To help the old blokes, not that need it of course, are current WheelKings players Kylie Gauci and Tina McKenzie fresh from their bronze medal win with the Gliders in Beijing, and Jeremy Van Asperen, Jonathon Simon and Shannon Dallas.

Also in Division One is a second Wenty Leagues WheelKings team led by Gaetano Bagnato and featuring South African champion import Nick Taylor. Those 2 guns are well-supported by Japanese able-bodied speedster Hikaru, and guards Glen Cook, Paul Ashley, Ricky Engles and Gliders representative Katie Hill.

Both teams have 3 games tomorrow starting at 9.30am at Sutherland Basketball Stadium. The tournament runs over the next 4 Sundays from 9.30am at various venues:

2/11 - Sutherland Basketball Stadium

9/11 - Hills Basketball Stadium

16/11 - Bankstown Basketball Stadium

23/11 - Marrickville PCYC (finals)
