Bill Latham's letter from Spain #4

Hi Guys

Since my last letter we have played 4 games against Toledo, Barcelona, Bilbao and Peinsa. We had mixed results 2-2. The two losses were to Barcelona and Bilbao. I had Valentine weekend off and spent the weekend in Puerto Banus with my girlfriend, Sandra. After this weekend we faced the second ranked team Peinsa and beat them by 7 points.

The games against Barcelona and Bilbao were very close, only losing in the last few minutes of each game. It came down to a couple of calls going to the other teams and the other teams capitalising on our mistakes. This was not good for us because up until then we were still in very good position on the table and these two losses have pushed us into 3rd with 4 losses. The top ranked team only has one loss and for us to have a chance at the championship we need them to lose. This is due to the Spanish league and how it is setup, because where you finish on the table is where you finish for the league as we do not have a final series or any final game. The win against Toledo was expected and we controlled the tempo of the game the whole time. Beating Peinsa was a good win for us as we were beaten by them at the start of the season by 6 points.

The Valentine weekend I spent with Sandra in Puerto Banus was great fun. We had great weather. We were staying in a resort on the coast which was full on the night as there was a few different bands and shows within the resort. While we felt out of place walking around the city with Rolls Royce’s and Lamborghini’s and multi million dollar yachts around it was great to see the area. Not quite swimming weather but walking on the beach and being near the coast was great for the weekend and the fish was very nice also.

Both Sandra and I have been unwell lately. My stomach bug seems to be hanging around longer…..a complication of the Crohn’s disease I think.

In the coming months, we have the handing over to the next president of ONCE Andalucia, Champion Cup qualifier and finals and also the King’s cup. In the middle of all this I am returning home for my brothers wedding. (this should be fun! With a 4-5 day turn around….but can’t miss my brothers wedding!) The next couple of months are going to be busy for me but I enjoy travelling around and all this basketball is going to be great as the Champions cup is strongest competition in Europe with the best teams from around Europe going at it for the weekend.

Regards
Bill Latham
