WheelKings get loose before the big dance

Sunday, 30th August, 2009

With the WNWBL and NWBL finals being played in Sydney over the next 2 weekends, today was the last opportunity for the Wenty players to let their hair down before the serious business of winning a championship.

The venue was the very nice Newington apartment of Jon Pollock and Bill Latham, and it was a great turnout with only a couple of players unable to make it. Everyone enjoyed a nice barbeque lunch on the apartment deck overlooking the sun-drenched pool. The kids then got to jump in the pool (which has it's own beach!) and learn about freezing cold water. Meanwhile, the adults used the medicinal properties of Corona and lime to get over any aches and pains from yesterday's win in Wollongong.

Gerry Hewson MC'd an informal awards presentation, something our club hasn't done for many, many years. Congratulations to the very worthy recipients:

Kylie Gauci - Club Person of the Year

Jon Pollock - Most Valuable Player

Jonathon Simon - Most Improved Player

Josh Meoli - Rookie of the Year

As the sun moved below the horizon, and the younger members of the team headed for home, it was time to pull out the cards and poker chips for a round of Texas Hold'em. Jon Pollock proved that his skills extend beyond the basketball court as he humbled his opponents, several of whom are regular tournament players.

The festivities ended at a sensible time and now the business end of the season is in full focus for the players and staff. Get to it, lads!
