Upwey Tecoma 24.13.157 defeated Healesville 7.11.53. Upwey set their win up early with a 6 goal to nil 1st quarter. Healesville did get 3 majors on the board in the 2nd term but Upwey still stretched their lead by booting 4 majors and taking a 7 goal lead into half time. The 2nd half was all Upwey as they took complete control; Upwey’s last quarter was quite outstanding as they booted 8 goals to Healesville 1 for a resounding 104 point victory. Upwey Tecoma’s best: Joshua Kamoen, Dylan Sloane and Steven Brotja. Healesville’s best: Mark Gibb, Daniel Plozza and Luke Barclay.
Olinda Ferny Creek 18.12.120 defeated Warburton Millgrove 16.13.109. A great game of footy with only a couple of kicks separating the teams all day. Olinda did start the better and looked a bit more polished with a 5 goal to 3 1st quarter but Warby kicked into gear in the 2nd booting 6 goals to 3 and at half time it was Warby by 1 goal. The 2nd half was great football with neither team giving an inch, it was Olinda that clawed their way back to the lead at 3 quarter time but it was only by 7 points. The game was set for a great last quarter and unbelievably, the last quarter went for a record 43 minutes. Olinda booted 5 goals to Warby’s 4 to win by a narrow 11 points and once again prove they will be a force to be reckoned with come finals. Olinda Ferny Creek’s best: Patrick Rosier, Benjamin Day and Tom Millwood. Warburton Millgrove’s best: Liam Barnard, Grant Newing and Michael Walker.
Monbulk 13.15.93 defeated Wandin 5.7.37. This wasn’t a pretty game as both teams haven’t been in great form. It was a spirited opening with Monbulk holding sway by 15 points at the 1st change with Wandin showing some good fighting spirit with 3 goals. The 2nd quarter was a slog with neither side taking advantage and at the long break it was Monbulk by 19 points. The 2nd half remained a scrappy affair with Monbulk never really looking in danger as they increased their lead over the tiring Wandin. Wandin was held scoreless in the last as Monbulk eventually ran away with a comfortable win. Monbulk’s best: Tom Wright, Luke McCormick and Michael Hughson. Wandin’s best: Hans Dudink, Daniel King and Zachary King.
Mount Evelyn 21.19.145 drew with Gembrook Cockatoo 22.13.145. What an amazing game of football. Gembrook came out of the blocks at blistering speed and at quarter time you would have thought this game was all but over as Gembrook had 12.1 on the board to Mt Evelyn’s 3.2. Gembrook actually stretched their lead slightly in the 2nd quarter and at the half, it was Gembrook by 59 points. What an amazing turnaround by Mt Evelyn in the 2nd half, they came out with a never say die attitude and slammed on 9 goals in the 3rd and held Gembrook to just 2 and all of a sudden, the margin was only 16 points. Mount Evelyn attacked relentlessly in the last booting 6.7 and if not for some inaccuracy probably should have pulled off an amazing come from behind victory. Gembrook booted 4.3 in the last quarter which saw scores all tied up at the final siren. Gembrook’s Andrew Shipp was outstanding booting 11 of his teams 22 goals in a clear best on ground performance. Mount Evelyn’s best: Cameron Buckland, Benjamin Farrugia and Jon Dalton. Gembrook Cockatoo’s best: Andrew Shipp (11 goals), Tristan Whytcross and Ricky Clark.
Woori Yallock 23.20.158 defeated Silvan 8.7.55. Silvan was ok for a half and did stay within striking distance of Woori at half time with Woori leading by 27 points. After the half however Woori put their foot down leaving Silvan in their wake, Woori booted 6 goals to 2 in the 3rd followed by an 8 goal to 1 final term to land a significant 103 point victory. Woori Yallock’s best: Patrick Sharp, Benjamin Monkhorst and Matthew Stolarczyk. Silvan’s best: Gary Timms, Christopher Webb and Scott Stegheuis.
Emerald 12.7.79 defeated Alexandra 6.9.45. At long last, Emerald has shown some of the form that we have been expecting. In muddy conditions, Emerald played their home ground with precision and by half time delivered a match winning lead of 8.5 to Alex’s 1.4 with Alexandra struggling to adapt to the heavy going. To Alexandra’s credit they adjusted their playing style in the second half and outscored Emerald 5.4 to 4.2. However, the first half damage had been done with emerald securing a victory that still keeps them in the finals hunt. Emerald’s best: Jason Bova, Steven Wright and Shane Buhmann. Alexandra’s best: Michael Bretherton, Ryan Carter and Thomas Spinks.
Yea 14.15.99 defeated Powelltown 14.9.93. Yea manage to hold on to a chance to play finals with only percentage keeping them out of the five. There wasn’t much in this game from start to finish, Powelltown lead at the first change by just 10 points and at the half by 9 points. It was the 3rd quarter where Yea set up their win with what was one of their best quarters for the year, they booted 6.4 and held Powelly to 1.1 and at 3 quarter time it was Yea by a handy 4 goals. Powelltown wasn’t about to roll over as they played one of their best quarters in the last booting 7.3 but Yea scored 4.3 which was enough to get them home by 1 straight goal. Yea’s best: Edward Neilson, Michael McKenna and Marc Scoble. Powelltown’s best: Luke Darwall, Daniel Wilson and Luke Meiszies.
Yarra Glen 19.12.126 defeated Seville 17.7.109. Great game put on by 2 teams that may well feature on the big day come finals. This game went goal for goal for most of the day with the 2nd quarter being a real highlight with 13 goals scored, 7 by Seville and 6 by Yarra Glen. At half time it was Yarra Glen by just 8 points. Both sides forward lines were in fine form with Yarra Glen’s Ryan Kueffer (7 goals) and Mark Attard (6 goals) doing the damage while Seville’s Kane Jones was his sides most damaging with 7 majors. Seville had a great 3rd quarter booting 6 goals while Yarra Glen managed 3 and at the last change it was Seville by 8 points. Yarra Glen proved why they are top of the ladder with a great last quarter, they booted 5 goals and held Seville to just 1 to come away with a hard fought 17 point victory. Yarra Glen’s best: Grant Braden, Mark Attard and Ryan Kueffer. Seville’s best: Dean Troyahn, Kane Jones and Brent Pereira.
Belgrave 18.18.126 defeated Thornton Eildon 15.14.104. Belgrave may be on the bottom of the ladder but they certainly didn’t play like a bottom of the ladder side as they held off Thornton to win by 22 points. With scores locked at 4.4 a piece at quarter time it was Belgrave that started to run harder than their opponents which gave them more scoring opportunities and all of a sudden Belgrave started to get on top and by 3 quarter time it was Belgrave by 25 points. Thornton did outscore Belgrave in the last but it was only by a mere 3points which saw Belgrave celebrate an excellent victory. Belgrave’s best: Kyle Chandler, Tom McNamara and Mark Francis. Thornton Eildon’s best: Brandon Kapakoulakis and Brendan Musgrove.
Yarra Junction 14.12.96 defeated Kinglake 7.13.55. Yarra Junction moves to 3rd on the ladder with a magnificent win over Kinglake. Yarra Junction’s Daniel Lever was nothing short of outstanding booting 9 of his sides 14 goals. This game was still in the balance at half time with Junction leading by 14 points but it was Junctions 3rd term that put the game beyond doubt, Junction may have only booted the 4 goals but they held Kinglake to just 1 behind and at 3 quarter time it was Junction by 40 points. The last quarter was even with Junction outscoring Kinglake by just the 1 point for what was their best win of the season. Yarra Junction’s best: Brad Charman, David Lever and Hugh Wadsworth. Kinglake’s best: Alexander Carpenter, Travers McNaught and Luke Nott.
