Poly-Clinic nurses take a break

There are 12 nurses who are rostered for four hours a day to tend to the needs of athletes who visit the clinic for a range of complaints and injuries.

The nurses work in teams of four and assist two doctors who make themselves available during the day. Before or after their 4 hour shift at the clinic the nurses also tend to their community patients – mainly checking up on new mums and their babies.

The clinic is divided up into three sections – medical, physiotherapy and anti-doping. Athletes come to the clinic with a range of complaints – abdominal plain, chest pains, asthma as well as strained muscles, backache and ankle problems.

They are checked by the nurses and then referred to the physiotherapist or a doctor depending on the injury. If the doctor feels there is a need, the patient may be referred  to the hospital but so far there have not been any urgent injuries.

The clinic is open from 8am to 8pm.
