Tahiti Sevens Team meets old friend

Yannick Gooding, the Captain of the Tahitian Sevens Team, and Teiki Dubois, the manager of the team, were very complimentary about the experience they have gained from playing regularly against the Cook Islands.

Yannick said that they have been preparing for these Games for about three years. Their first taste of international competition in Sevens was at the South Pacific Games in 2007.

The last time they played the Cook Islands the score was 22-19 for which they are very proud. The difference in the  scores had been much wider in the past. They take this as a sign that they are improving.

In Tahiti, the most popular sports are Va'a, Soccer and Volleyball. Rugby Sevens does not feature at this time but is slowly gaining in popularity,  especially among teenagers. Touch Rugby is also being promoted and administrators are targeting the interest of girls.

There is also a move to introduce rugby skills at primary level to gain youngsters' interest in sevens rugby and touch rugby.
