South Africa shut down by English defence

One of the lowest first quarter scores of the tournament indicated how evenly matched these teams were, coming into Monday night’s match. However, England’s faster pace and more accurate passing and goalshooting enabled them to stretch their lead to 19-10 by the end of the second quarter. South Africa had difficulty getting past England’s mid-court defence. In the goal circle, missed opportunities by South Africa were quickly snapped up by team captain and GK, Beckford-Chambers and sent down toward the English goal. The teams struggled for possession mid-court. The English team appeared to have a better defensive pattern but the long periods in the centre court area restricted the number of goals scored by both teams. A complete reorganisation of the English team at half time did not unsettle the players who continued to add the points to the scoreboard where it counted. England won the game 44-24 and will now play Australia in tomorrow’s semi-final.  South Africa as Monday’s losing team will play the Cook Islands who had a devastating loss to Australia, 86-17.
