Drivers learn protocols

There is quite a lot to learn if you are a designated driver for an important someone from overseas. Sinai Hall was the venue for the meeting of all those who have opted to drive VIP cars during the Pacific Mini Games.
Tukaka Ama explained the protocols related to driving VIPs and chefs de mission of overseas sports teams. The course started with a list of dos and don’ts when taking on the role of chauffeur-cum-tour guide and restaurant adviser. Of greatest importance was the safety and security of the important passenger, and ensuring that meeting their transport needs was paramount. Ama demonstrated the procedure of getting the passenger into and out of the car and stressed being timely and available when required, and also being professional in their manner, dress and behaviour at all times.
Robert Graham followed with an explanation of the accreditation process. He explained the meanings of all the symbols and signs which will be represented on the drivers’ accreditation cards. Graham stressed the importance of drivers having their accreditation with them at all times, especially when they are driving in the PMG vehicles. Their accreditation information will denote what areas they will be able to access. A significant identifying mark will be the colour at the bottom of the card. This will indicate which areas of each venue they will be able to access. Drivers will drop their VIPs off to areas at sporting venues that only they can access. Drivers will then move to another area of the venue indicated on their card, where they will wait until their passenger is ready to move on to their next destination. Specific letters and numbers on the card also denote what dining and village facilities volunteers can access. REMEMBER - no accreditation, no access.
