The VWFL Premier Division’s “super Sunday” saw Darebin roll on to another big win, VU St. Albans pick up their first win of the season and Diamond Creek hold off St. Kilda. It all took place on rain-soaked ovals around the state, making for physical contests all round.
Darebin remain undefeated in 2013 after dismantling Melbourne Uni 15.13 (103) to 1.3 (9) at AH Capp Reserve. The game was done and dusted as contest by half-time, with the Falcons taking a ten-goal lead to the main break. The Mugars recovered slightly as the Falcons retreated to be held to only five goals for the rest of the game. An even spread of goal-kickers did the damage on the scoreboard for the Falcons, as they were led by Nicole Callinan, Katie Brennan and Tracy Ashby all game. Emma Kearney, Lauren Spark and Nicola Stevens continued their run of form, trying hard for the outclassed visitors.
Diamond Creek proved too good for St Kilda at Plenty War Memorial Park to follow, coming out 10.10 (70) to 6.14 (50) victors. The eventual 20-point margin was the biggest of the day as the two sides went back and forth. The Sharks led narrowly at the first break, but the Creekers changed that quickly by the half-time break, they wouldn’t let it go for the rest of the day. A three-goal performance from Stacey Cross was decisive for the home side, as were solid games from Anna Saxton (making her return to senior football) and Lauren Morecroft. A three-goal haul from Pheobe McWilliams was supported by Martha Cantwell and Claire Heffernan for the losing visitors.
VU St Albans Spurs won their first game of the season at Kings Park Reserve on Sunday, their drought breaking over Berwick, 10.15 (75) to 7.7 (49). The victory comes off the back of a challenging year so far at St Albans; the four points had much more significance. A physical contest ensued as the ball became bogged down at a muddy and wet Kings Park, whoever won the ball at ground level was going to go a long way in deciding the close contest, the visitors kept contesting but St Albans consistently won out. A tense final quarter played out as the Spurs looked to hang on, an audacious Berwick took the game right up to their hosts but it just wasn’t to be. Ashleigh Guest, Kara Donnellan and Ngakita Ruwhiu led the way for the red and blue, while Courtney Clarkson, Amanda Walsh and Danielle McIntyre were outstanding for the beaten Wickers.
