Nomination Process

Due to high interest in this age group for development opportunities,  interested players need to be nominated by their schools and a squad of players will be selected in each age group.  It is exciting that we are able to work with more players under this programme than we could when we had rep teams.

Following a selection session, a squad will be named for each age group.

Players need to be nominated by their School/Junior Club on form NHV 9a. Players nominated MUST be available for all PDP dates as listed for their age group, registered with NHV, and agree to pay the PDP subs (if selected).

Players nominated should have a solid grasp of basic netball skills and be ready for further development.  Size/height is not important.  They need to be good listeners, reliable in attendance and happy to work with players from other schools.  We are developing for the future so they do not have to be playing in your school's top team currently if they meet the criteria.

Background

futureFERNS is Netball New Zealand’s (NNZ) official junior Netball Programme for Year 1 to 8 children. As an extension to this programme, NNZ has developed the Year 7 & 8 Player Development Programme (PDP).

For Year 7 & 8 players, PDP has been developed to replace the representative programme previously offered. PDP provides more opportunities for players to develop and extend their technical, tactical and athlete development skills, while also encouraging a broader talent pool and continuing to engage players.

Netball Hutt Valley began by offering PDP to Year 7 players in 2018.  In 2019 both Year 7 and Year 8 squads were selected. This is in line with other Centres in our Zone (and nationally) where a tournament based development approach is being phased out in favour of the new programme.

Purpose of PDP

To provide more opportunities to a broader base of players, to further develop their skills and inspire a lifelong love of the game.

  • widen and improve the talent base through development opportunities
  • create an environment for players that enhances their capability
  • provide a programme that includes a wide range of technical and tactical development for players across all positions as Year 7 & 8 is too early to specialise.
  • to retain players in netball
  • to facilitate deliberate play and to enhance intrinsic motivation (maximise fun, enjoyment and age/stage adapted)
  • to provide players with the opportunities to continue to progress towards becoming the best that they can be
  • to implement a national approach to talent development.

Programme content

For the Year 7 Squad the theme is SPACE, with these topics covered:

  • Creating Space
  • Passing to Space
  • Denying Space
  • Finding Space
  • Defending into Space

For the Year 8 Squad, the theme is GAINING POSSESSION, with these topics covered:

  • Deceive to Receive
  • Vision
  • Retention
  • Defend to Receive
  • Creating Turnovers
A festival/tournament day will also be held with players placed in teams for the day to showcase their development and enjoy the experience of tournament play with support from PDP coaches.

Coaches

Our Netball Development Officer (Lyn) will be coordinating a group of suitably trained/experienced coaches to assist with facilitating the PDP including some Central Zone coaches.  Developing and school coaches are welcome to attend and work alongside these coaches.  It is very rewarding to work with a group of keen players and should be lots of fun!

With all sessions are held locally, helping with PDP is a great alternative for coaches who are interested in player development but unable to commit to coaching rep teams that have travel requirements, or teams with weekly practice sessions.

If you would like to be involved as a coach in 2020, or have any further questions, please email Kirsten at admin@netballhuttvalley.co.nz
