Women's Basketball Signs Three for 2012-13

HONOLULU—University of Hawai'i women's basketball head coach Dana Takahara-Dias announced the signing of three players to national letters of intent. Diane Moore, Morgan Roberts, and Shahana Zeigler have all committed during the early signing period.

Moore is a versatile 5-10 guard/forward who comes to UH as a junior after two seasons at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, Calif. Last season, Moore averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds per game in her rookie season and was the only California JC player in 2010-11 to average over 20 points and 10 boards per game. Moore earned second-team all-state (California JC) and first team all-conference honors and was voted Most Valuable Player in one tournament while making two other all-tourney teams as a freshman. She scored a season high 37 points against Saddleback JC.

Takahara-Dias on Moore, “Diane is a strong, athletic guard/post who can score. She has a great perimeter game and has deep range that stretches defenses. Moore also has the ability to score off the dribble off on-ball screens. What sets her apart is that she has a solid inside game so she can take advantage of any mismatch that she may have.”

Roberts is a 5-9 guard out of Mount Albert Grammar School in Auckland, New Zealand. Most recently, she is training on the New Zealand Tall Ferns (national team) U19 team that captured the Australian State Championships in which she averaged over 20 points per game. Roberts led her school to the Auckland City High School Championship in 2009 and finished fifth in the national tournament. In 2010, she helped lead the Waitakere basketball club team to their first ever U17 National Championship—earning all-tournament and MVP honors. Roberts is also an accomplished track athlete who has competed in the 400m, 800m and 1,500 m races. Roberts also plays touch rugby and netball.

Takahara-Dias on Roberts, “Morgan is a guard who can score. She can catch and shoot the 3, but can also score off the dribble. She is a perfect fit for our system with what we're trying to do offensively. Morgan will be a consistent scorer from the perimeter for us.”

Ziegler is a dynamic 5-7 combo-guard out of Lynwood High School in Lynwood, Calif. Last season, she averaged 7.1 points, 3.1 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game. Ziegler was named first team all-conference and plays for the Cal Storm Elite Black U17 team and Team Tauasi for Nike Nationals.

Takahara-Dias on Ziegler, “Shahana is a quick, athletic playmaking guard who can push the tempo of the game. She has improved her mid-range pull-up jumper this past year and defensively she is very active and aggressive and creates turnovers. She is a leader on the court who elevates the games of her teammates.”
