Under 12 Breakers Elite Tour (Melbourne 2009)

Melbourne Tour Review: (By Dave Mackay)

After the early start at the airport we arrived in Melbourne only to be held up
in customs for close to 2 hours, which mean that we only arrived at out
first game 30 minutes before tip off.

The first game for each the boys and girls was
against Diamond Valleys  top under 12 team (1998 born kids), and both
teams won convincingly. The next two days and two games they brought in
older kids to make the competition tougher which
helped us to prepare for the tournament. Diamond Valley was a great
club, and their kids really enjoyed playing us, and will hopefully do a
return trip to play us here some time next year.

We then traveled south Thursday afternoon to
Oakleigh and took the group Ten pin bowling, which was fun. Friday was
our rest day and most of it was spent at the very large Chadstone
Shopping Mall. We eat lunch and Dinner there and went to
the movies in between.

Friday night was the first game of the Tigers
tournament and both teams started with great wins. The venue at
Dandenong is very impressive with 16 basketball courts. Saturday the
boys had 3 games and the girls had 2 which they all won, and
played some great basketball. Sunday the boys went straight to the
final which they won, and the girls had to win a tough semi final after
being down 14- 2 at the start of the game to get to the final in the
afternoon, before losing to a tough Franston Club
team.

All the kids received a trophy for winning (boys)
and running up (girls) at the prize giving with NBL legend Andrew Gaze.
The tournament was very well run and all games run on time which was
nice for a change.

The key on-court aspects that we took away was the
need to get our kids better at handling pressure, which will mean
continuing to push the intensity of the weekly trainings. There will be
some changes to the programme after term 3, but
I will let you know more about that shortly.

If you would like individual feedback please let me know.

The kids enjoyed the all you can eat places we took
them for dinners, and no one got sick, which was a relief. We had heaps
of fun off the court, and the staff returned home extremely tired, as
20 kids don't often remain quiet for very long.

We will look at doing this every year as it was
such a success, and we have made more great contacts over there which
makes things easier.

Melbourne Tour Review - News Article on Breakers website:

20 of our up and coming stars (10 boys 10 girls) took their skills over to Melbourne to play their Australian counterparts.

The tour started with warm up games against a North Melbourne club, the
Diamond Valley Eagles. Both teams finished with a 1 win 2 loss record
and learned valuable lessons about what they needed to do in the
tournament.

Both teams then travelled south to play in the
Melbourne Tigers tournament in Dandenong. The boys grew from strength
to strength going through the tournament unbeaten. The boys capped off
the tournament in style by winning the final 50 - 32 over the Island
Bay club. Coach Lawrence Lianda was extremely happy with the progress
the boys made over the tour and winning the final was a reflection of
the hard work the boys had put in.

The girls team went through pool play with some tough wins. They showed
great fight in winning their semi final 31-27 over the Waverley club
after being down 14 - 2 at the start of the game. They ended up runners
up to a strong Frankston team. Coach Ang Perrott-Hunt was happy with
the way the girls played over the tournament and the players will no
doubt be stronger from the experience.

The tour is part of the Breakers junior development pathway, with
this group of players being selected from the current group of Elite
12's (Under 13).
