(Roselyn B. Monroyo) The Emon Lodge 179 Basketball League returns this month with nine teams battling for the 2012 season championship.

After taking a hiatus last year, the Emon Lodge caging will open its second season on Sept. 9 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. The Basketball Association of Northern Mariana Islands-affiliated league so far has lured nine teams: the Sonics, Archers, Servitek Auto Paint Shop, Fong's Bakery, Armatech, Hip-Hop, Thunder, Ashleys, and Pacific Islands Club.

Representatives of registered and interested teams are requested to attend a final meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 6:30pm at the pavilion inside the Oleai Sports Complex. The league's ground rules, updated FIBA rules, details about the opening and criteria for best muse and best uniform contests will be discussed at the meeting. The $400 entrance fee payable to MDX Sports Association and copy of team roster are also due at the final meeting. Each team is allowed a maximum of 12 players.

Games will be played three times a week or every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at the Ada gym. Two matches are scheduled on weekdays with the first one set for 6:30pm and the second at 8pm. Three games will be played every Saturday with the first match kicking off at 4pm, the second at 5:30pm, and the last at 7pm.

For the Sunday opening, ceremonies will start at 9am and organizers are planning to have all teams play in the kick-off day. League coordinators are also hoping to draw one more squad before next week's opening to have five games at the start of the 2012 season.

The Emon Lodge caging had its inaugural season in 2010 with nine teams playing in the league. The list included eventual champion Mobil, Armatech, Oches, Marianas Wireless, MBI-Right Guard, Wings Travel, Tropical Laundry, Marianas Resort, and the Sparks.

Mobil took the championship after beating Armatech in the winner-take-all finale, 93-80. Mobil's main man Jun Estolas won the inaugural season MVP and he also made it to the Mythical Five, joining teammate Kelvin Fitial, Armatech's Elmer Esdrelon and Junar Guiab, and the Sparks' Tom Santos.
