EMON LODGE BASKETBALL LEAGUE GAME 5

Ol’Aces rout Blazers in Emon Lodge caging

The Ol’Aces’ Juan Iguel goes up for a layup against the Blazers’ Juan Maratita during the third quarter of their game in the Emon Lodge caging last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) The Ol’Aces had a walk in the park against the Blazers, nailing an 88-55 win in the first game in the Lodge No. 179 Brotherhood Basketball League 2013/Docomo Pacific Cup last Saturday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The Ol’Aces were on target from the get-go, taking a 28-7 advantage and never looked back from thereon, leading by as much as 37 points against the Blazers, who absorbed their second loss in as many games. Defending champion Mobil handed the Blazers their first defeat, also via blowout, 91-69.

Veteran Peter Camacho started the Ol’Aces’ offensive engine, scoring 6 of the team’s first 8 points before the young guns took over and set up a breakaway early in the match. The fast and furious combo of Jesus Iguel and Mike Iguel added 7 and 4 markers, respectively, while CNMI U19 National Team member Christian Mizer came of the bench and gave the Ol’Aces their last two baskets in the first period. Freddie Litulimar and Junior Renguul also made it to the board for the Ol’Aces in the opening canto.

While the Ol’Aces’ well-run offense in the first 10 minutes was a thing of beauty, the Blazers’ was painful to the eyes. The Blazers made only three field goals—hard earned ones— and no player on their roster scored more than 2 points in the opening frame.

The Blazers picked up their scoring in the second canto and it was the only time they managed to match up well with the Ol’ Aces. The Blazers scored 21 points with Juan Maratita drilling 11 of them. The Ol’Aces one upped the Blazers, making 22 points to stretch the advantage to 22 at halftime, 50-28.

Iguel continued his consistent contribution for the Ol’Aces, chipping in 7, while agile forward Josh Norita added 5. Three other Ol’Aces players made at least two baskets apiece in the second canto to keep the comfortable lead at the break.

Iguel and company kept going at the start of the second half with the Ol’Aces guard tallying 5 of their first 9 points in the third and Camacho reporting back for duty and getting 6 more markers. Mizer then closed out the third with a string of 5 points to move the Ol’Aces further away, 71-42, with only one quarter to go.

With the win almost in the bag, Iguel slowed down in the fourth quarter, but Norita took over, nailing 8 of his 13 markers in the final canto to keep the big gap and hand the Ol’Aces a huge win in its debut game in the 9-team field.

Iguel top-scored for the Ol’Aces with 19 points, while Camacho and Mizer added 12 each and Olaitiman and Renguul logged 10 apiece. Juan Maratita paced the Blazers with his 15 points and was the lone player on the team to break in double figures.

Meanwhile, results of the second game between Mobil and AXE Proa will be reported in Saipan Tribune’s Tuesday edition.
