EMON LODGE BASKETBALL LEAGUE GAME 10

Mobil sneaks past Armatech

Mobil’s Zack Babauta leans in for a jumper against Armatech’s Noel David during the third quarter of their game in the Emon Lodge caging last Thursday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) The six-man crew of Mobil rallied past Armatech in the fourth quarter to pull off a 93-92 victory in the second game in the Emon Lodge No. 179 Brotherhood Basketball League 2013/Docomo Pacific Cup last Saturday night at at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Mobil grabbed the victory, its second in three games, despite trailing by as much as 13 points in the fourth canto with Jun Estolas putting the team on the lead and the rest of his teammates making a couple of defensive stops to hand Armatech its second straight loss.

Estolas canned two free throws off a Noel David foul from the baseline to give Mobil a precarious one-point lead, 17 seconds left on the clock. Armatech sued for time and when the game resumed Elmer Esdrelon went for a drive and draw play, dishing the ball out to 6’9” center Ken McCain. However, McCain fumbled, as he was hounded by Estolas and Marvin Rabauliman.

Fortunately for Armatech, Rabauliman was called stepping on the baseline as he tried to save the ball. Armatech then went for its second offensive set with 12 seconds to go with Junar Guiab making the inbound and passing the leather to Marlon De Dios right under the basket. De Dios faked off the defense of Estolas and thought he was fouled when the referee blew his whistle. Instead, the Armatech big man was called for a traveling violation and Mobil was awarded possession, 11 seconds remaining in the game.

A Freddie Pelisamen error off the dribble after the inbound play returned the leather to Armatech with David picking up the loose ball. David then threw a forward pass to Guiab, who was not in a good position to pull up for a shot and decided to kick the ball back to the former. David went for a reverse layup and missed. Armatech and Mobil players then tapped the ball out in the rebound play and the leather landed in front of Elmer Esdrelon at the right key, about 10 feet away from the basket. Esdrelon quickly picked it up and threw a prayer with the shot going in. However, the basket was not counted after the referee conferred with the table officials, who said that time had already lapsed with the ball still on Esdrelon’s hands.

Rabauliman led Mobil’s come-from-behind win with his 25 points, while Pelisamen added 24. Rabauliman’s two free throws in the closing minutes moved Mobil within two, 89-91. He earlier broke up an Armatech 3-on-1 fastbreak play and drew an advantage foul against Guiab to give Mobil two charities plus possesion, with 1:13 left on the clock. After Rabauliman’s two charities, Mobil faltered on its first two offensive sets with Errol Peredo missing two forced shots. However, Mobil got the game-tying basket on the third serving with Estolas spotting Pelisamen underneath the goal, 34 seconds left on the clock.

A Guiab split in the ensuing play put Armatech back in the lead, 92-91, but Estolas answered with a pair of charities to grab the driver’s seat and the shorthanded Mobil went on to keep the upper hand and the win with its crucial defensive stops.
