HOOPAHOLICS, KB MARKET BOUNCE BACK

KB Market and the Hoopaholics recovered from their debut losses after beating separate foes in the 2013 UFO-Budweiser Open Division Basketball League last Thursday night at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium. KB Market, which bowed to Axe Proa last Tuesday, bounced back with a 103-83 trashing of the JP World Corporation in the curtain-raiser, while the Hoopaholics played in the last match of the day and notched a 75-66 victory over Toka Degree (0-2). The first match of the day was close in the first half and JP World was still in the game after the third period, facing only an 8-point deficit, 78-86, before it collapsed in the fourth canto. JP World scored only 5 points in the final frame against the 17 of KB Market. Only Gil Gapor and Freddie Pelisamen had field goals for JP World, while KB Market earned several points from the foul line early in the fourth to widen its gap and complete the 20-point win with back-to-back triples from Elmer Esdrelon and Pando Muleta in the closing minutes. Esdrelon sizzled for 32 points for KB Market and hit six triples, while Ivan Devero and Brendon Talania also finished in twin digits with 18 and 12, respectively. Pelisamen paced JP World with his 18 points. Three more JP World players also netted double figures, but only eight players suited up for coach Marvin Deocares and most of them were gassed out against the much fresher legs of KB Market in the final canto. In the second game, the Hoopaholics also took charge in the fourth quarter to turn a 47-54 deficit to the 9-point win. The Hoopaholics, which suffered a sorry 70-71 loss to Kanoa in the league opener, fired 29 big points in the fourth frame against the dozen of Toka to post the come-from-behind win. The Hoops spread the wealth in the fourth canto to overhaul Toka’s lead and steal the win. Jerry Diaz led the fourth period attack, as he scored 9 of his 13 points in that quarter, including crucial free throws that iced it for the Hoops. The Hoopaholics also capitalized on the foul troubled Toka, gaining 12 points from the stripe in the fourth frame. Toka got only four points from the foul line and was held to four field goals in the last 10 minutes of play.
