FBL: Surangel and Sons nips PRA Choppers, 76-74

Defending champion Surangel and Sons showed grace under pressure as they survived a tough PRA Choppers, 76-74 Sunday in the ongoing 2009 Filipino Basketball League (FBL) at the Palau National gym.

Down 52-48 going into the last quarter, Surangel and Sons turned to point guard Deloy Pingot and ace scorer Arnold Undencimo who anchored a 28-22 run to sail with the win and hold on to the top of the standings with a 12-3 win-loss record.

The game could have gone into overtime as the score was at 76-74 with less that 1.16 seconds left in the game. Pingot mistakenly fouled PRA Choppers’ Rey Potot and send him to the free throw line.

As Potot was lining up for his charity shots, the crowd kept their silence and hold on to their seats. When Potot missed the first shot that marked another loss for the Choppers as they logged behind with a 1-14 tally.

Pingot led the scoring fray for Surangel and Sons with 17 markers while teammate Undencimo had 12. Bhoey Gopez led the stellar performance for the Choppers with 21 points on a losing cause.

In other games, Jun Bautista topscored with 24 points as he carried the load for Western Union over Palau Nationals, 93-79; J-Trading Jaguars won over Hanpa Cardinals, 93-69; and PIA Slashers kept Rams Ballers at bay, 79-60.

Games will resume on August 16 with Ilocandia Bulls versus Hanpa Cardinals in the opener at 11 a.m. followed by the Surangel and Sons-Rams Ballers match at 12:30 p.m. as J-Trading Jaguars meet Palau Nationals at 2 p.m. while Western Union will be pitted against Rangers in the main game at 3:30 p.m.
