Peched claims 2011 IP&E shell NBL title

Team Peched foiled the Islanders title retention bid carving out an 83-78 victory last August 24 to claim the championship crown of the 2011 season of the Shell IP&E National Basketball League (NBL) at the Palau National gym.

Peched closed the championship series with a 2-0 count. Douglas Schmidt Jr. played like man possessed as he led all scorers for Peched with 38 points while teammates Lendl Dedoch and Weston chipped in 15 and 13 markers, respectively.

Despite being outscored in the third quarter by the Islanders, Peched managed to climb back and took away the game from the defending champs, who were missing John Stills and Leon Mengloi. The two players are part of the athletics team of Palau to the 15th Pacific Games in New Caledonia.

Despite being short handed, Franky Kuchad paced the Islanders with 21 baskets while teammates Sunshine Soalablai, Kent Moore and Roger Santos complimented his performance with identical 15 points each.

In the consolation game, Mercury Optimax led by Reid Una Rikrik’s 24 and Mesikt’s 23 was enough to beat team Meda, 71-65.

Winners were awarded with trophies immediately after the finals.

The tournament, which is supervised by the Palau Basketball Federation (PBF), is a tobacco, alcohol and drug free program. By Peter Erick L. Magbanua (Island Times News)
