FACT: As of today, there are 33 days left until the first bounce of season 2015!
In celebration of the return of football, the WRFL Media Team will bring you all the latest news over the pre-season from a different club each day, in our 2015 Season Countdown.
Today we kick off the countdown with the Spotswood Football Club.
Making it to their eighth consecutive Grand Final appearance last season, Spotswood is keen to put the record books into overdrive as they prepare for yet another finals appearance in 2015. With the progression of a number of its 2014 Under 18s premiership players pushing into its senior ranks and the additional of a few new recruits signing up over the pre-season, club Football Operations Manager Tony Walshe says its exciting times ahead at McLean Reserve.
Teams fielding in 2015:
Auskick will again be part of our programme; we will field 6 junior teams, plus our 18’s, Reserves and Seniors.
How has the pre-season been?
The preseason has been very good, our training camp on the Murray River was very well attended and of great benefit to our players.
Who are some of the noteworthy signings for 2015?
We are very happy to have secured Lachlan Fairley from Werribee in the VFL, Jason Marks from Corowa, Shaun Buttigieg-Clark from Caroline Springs, Shamus Tippett from Yarraville and Matt Dumbleton from DeLaSalle. Shaun, Shamus and Matt all played junior football at Spotswood. We also welcome back past Premiership players in Michael Cassidy, Michael Knight and Sam Wood. We are mindful of not recruiting players at the expense of developing our younger players, so we are very pleased with our squad for 2015. A number of new under 16 and 18 players have also joined our club this year which is great for our future.
What are your expectations for the new season?
We want to play to our potential in all of our teams and hopefully that will mean finals.
Who are some of the young up and coming players to look out for this year? There are a number of our Premiership under 18s from last year that now take the step into Senior football and they are all training really well and will be striving to play in our seniors, we are really excited about the potential of this group of young players.
Any coaching changes for the season?
Our senior coaching team of Tom Langlands and Grant Smith is unchanged. The club has appointed past premiership player Jeremy Bond to coach the Reserves and he will be assisted by 300 plus gamer Scott Stafford. Matt Dean and Trevor Carr continue with the Under 18s, Tony Dimkovski is in charge of the Under 16As, Travis Rae the Under 14As, Travis Wheeler the Under 13s, Under 11/12 Rohan Stafford with the Under 16Cs coach is yet to be confirmed.
