Returning to the WRFL after 17 years in the VAFA, Werribee Districts Football Club president Rod Harrington says the club’s senior teams are ready to make an impact on the Division One competition.
Number of teams this year:
Looks like we’re shaping up to have 16 teams this year…..Seniors/Reserves, 2 x Under 18s and 12 Junior teams.
Pre-season News:
Players started in November and numbers have been strong throughout the pre-season. Under new coach Wade Chapman the feedback from the players is that it has been the hardest pre-season they have done. There has been a lot of enthusiasm and excitement around as we prepare to enter a new era re-entering the WRFL.
Expectations for 2014:
The main aim of the seniors is to be competitive and consolidate themselves in the Division 1 competition.
For our juniors, our main aim is to look to grow and develop them as players, so they have the ability to move up the ranks as their careers continue.
Significant signings over the pre-season:
Many of our homegrown players have returned such us Brent Morrow, Andrew Panayi, Tate McCutcheon, Shaun McCutcheon, Jon Hevern to name a few. We have added Ben Sharp (ex West Coast and Werribee), Martin Porter and Nick Johnston as well as Brent Prismall when not on Footscray VFL duties.
Young players to watch out for this year:
David Briscoe is performing very well and we look forward to seeing Jonathon De Pelligren continue with his development.
Staff/coaching changes:
2014 has seen a changing of the guard in the football department. Ex Sydney Swans player Wade Chapman comes in as Senior Coach taking over from club stalwart Kirk Norton. Rick Visentin joins Wade on the coaching panel as does Marty Porter as a playing assistant. Darron Batties returns to the club as Reserves coach
