Last week saw the Wyndham Suns Under 19s face up against the club’s Under 11s squad in a friendly intraclub match.
While the Suns’ juniors play in the WRFL and the seniors in the Victorian Amateur Football Association, the match saw the club unit as one on the field.
“As a club we have been working really hard to build a "one club" spirit between the senior and junior sides of the club,” Suns secretary Val Lear said.
Goddard Street did not know what hit it, with a number of Under 19 players noting the Under 11s skills with comments such as 'nice mark kiddo', 'not a bad kick mate' and 'I wanna play in the Under 11s' thrown across the field during play.
Putting into practice the skills that Coach Brian ‘Dicky’ Knee has been teaching them over the past few months, the under 11s held their own against the older boys.
“Everyone that was there had a smile from ear to ear, you don't normally hear laughter in a footy match but when you have an event like this you hear a lot of laughter,” Under 11s Team manager Kirsty Palimaka said.
“There were kid's trying to take specky's on the older boys, the older boys marking the ball or trying to on their knees, marks dropped right into someone’s arms - it was honestly an all round awesome effort by everyone.”
Despite all the laughs, it was the Under 11s who took out the victory, beating the senior boys by 17-points.
“It was a fantastic experience for our Under 11 team to play against our Under 19s, and watching the way the Under 19s showed leadership and their competitive streak was brilliant,” Palimaka said.
“A massive thanks has to go to the coaches of both the teams - Brad Gilham of the 19's and Brian 'Dicky' Knee of the 11's for embracing this experience.”
