Whilst many of us enjoyed the mid-season break from the regular home and away season, over 200 of the league’s best junior players from U12-U16 and Youth Girls competitions, competed in the 2014 Junior Interleague competition and National Sports Museum Metro Championships.
Commencing from May 28 to June 18, the Junior Interleague competition saw our U12, U13 and U16 squads compete against the best juniors from the Riddell District Football League (RDFL) and the Essendon District Football League (EDFL).
Kicking off their 2014 campaign was the U12 squad who defeated the EDFL by 24-points in their opening clash before going down to RDFL in the second match by just nine points.
The U13s began their crusade in much the same fashion, defeating RDFL by 17-points in game one before clinching victory in a close match against the EDFL by eight points.
Both the U12 and U13 squads will play their third and final match against the EDFL on Wednesday June 18th at 6:30pm with the U12s to play at Dempster Park, while the U13s will run out under lights at Keilor Park Reserve.
Going down by one point in their first game against the RDFL, our U16 squad is keen to make amends on Wednesday night against the EDFL.
Having chalked up more scoring shots than the boys from the RDFL, coach Andrew Willis and his squad will no doubt want to convert more and take their opportunities.

Over the past two weeks, the combined Western Youth Girls and U14 and U15 Division One and Two squads have been competing in this year’s National Sports Museum Metro Champs.
Playing over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, the hybrid EDFL and WRFL Youth Girls squad gave their best efforts against very competitive South East Juniors, Northern FL and Yarra Juniors FL outfits.
Despite not chalking up a win, the Western Youth Girls coach Ron Sikora said he was nothing but proud of his team’s efforts.
“The girls did a tremendous job out there and were competitive right up to the very end,” he said.
“It was great seeing the girls mix not only between the different clubs within their own league, but to see the girls make friends with players from the opposite league was sensational and they should all be very proud of their efforts.”
In wintery conditions, our U15 Division One and Two squads showed tremendous courage and determination in their respective matches against the SEJ, SMJFL, EDFL and YJFL teams.
U15 Division One player Fraser Considine top scored for the WRFL, with five individual goals to his name over the competition, while Division Two’s Tyson Young and Will Markovski were named amongst their side’s best.
Our U14 Division One and U14 Division Two squads can also be pleased with their efforts, with the U14 Division One winning two matches for the carnival.
Connor Thar was dynamic for the U14 Division One outfit, while Will Smyth and Josh Harris were a force to be reckoned with in the Division Two squad.
WRFL Football Operations and Club Development Officer, Tim Shellcot was pleased with how all our teams handled themselves throughout the course of the competitions.
“It was great to see all players across all squads represent the league with distinction, and the level of talent in the younger age groups is particularly pleasing.
“Thanks to the coaches, support staff and parents who gave up their time over the past few weeks to provide our best junior players with the opportunity to play representative football. Thanks also go to the WRFL clubs who provided facilities for training and who hosted matches. ”
