After establishing themselves as a new club at the start of season 2014, the Wyndham Suns Football Club senior teams will join their junior counterparts in the Western Region Football League in 2015 and beyond.
Officially announced at the WRFL Senior Presentation Night, Suns’ President Graeme Clark confirmed the shift from the Victorian Amateurs Football Association.
“Myself and a number of our committee members met with WRFL chief executive Bob Tregear and General Manager Football Operations David Newton about the move last week and the league confirmed that the Suns would be welcomed to play in the WRFL in season 2015,” Clark said.
The switch will see the Suns’ seniors, reserves and under 18 teams come across to the WRFL, with the seniors and reserves to play in the new Division Three competition.
“The Wyndham Suns Football Club is looking forward to starting our year in the WRFL in Division Three and is eager to work our way through success and promotion to Division One.”
With the club’s juniors already established as a member club within the league, the Suns were not required to seek a transfer or apply to the WRFL Board for a special application for the move.
“It’s fantastic to have our seniors come over to join our juniors and become one whole club,” Clark said.
“We’re all really excited about the decision and I know the players are eager to get out on the field and get amongst it next year.”
WRFL CEO Bob Tregear said that the league was delighted to welcome the Suns’ seniors next season, which will not only strengthen the club as a unit, but also enhance the league’s new third division.
“The Wyndham Suns Football Club has always shown a good strength and depth in their committee and has always been in the forefront of assisting the league in our junior finals series.
“The league is delighted with their decision to join its juniors and we look forward to growing the third division and football in Melbourne’s west in 2015 and beyond.”
